Scent releasers?

I came across an article a week or two ago about many things most people don't realize in the parks and one of the things mentioned were the smells in certain parts of the park as mentioned in one of the dis unplugged's more recent videos. The article went on to say that many of the smells of the parks are actually intended to smell a certain way. A source in the article claimed to know of disney installing scent sprayer type electronic scent releasers in certain areas of the park similar to the surroundings. The examples they gave were pirates of the Caribbean line cue always smelling like the ocean to some extent and parts of main street always smelling like fresh sugar cookies despite if they were even making that in the bakery or confectionary. Does anybody know if this is really true? It would make sense to me but its a cool concept either way.

On a tour of DL they said there were vanilla scents piped along Main St (and that awnings were designed to hold the scent in) because Walt wanted each guest to have a wonderful experience, like smelling cookies from the bakery, even if nothing was in the oven. . .
Didn't hear anything about, nor have I noticed, scents in queues. . .
HTH!

thats really cool i never new that and have been going to disney my whole life

I've heard this before and there is an imagineering term for it, but I can't remember it right this minute.

Can't really comment about Disney. Though want to recall they did talk about this on one of those old behind the magic tv specials...if memory is correct

We can confirm that casinos in Las Vegas does this all around their resorts and casinos
If forget what they call this application/industry.
We worked in entertainment in Vegas casinos for many years. And a good friend of ours worked in this industry.
It's crazy the amount of money they spend in. Psychological research and designing every little detail around psychological elements.
He also consulted with grocery stores for sort if the same thing. Every item is strategically placed etc.
needless to say very interesting

Some shopping malls also do it. As research shows certain smells can entice you to spend money. One of those being smell of fresh baked cookies. This is why most malls always have a cookie shop in them.

Sent is the strongest element tied to memory recall. So we don't doubt that Disney does this

I have heard also that one of the tricks to selling a currently occupied house is to have an apple pie cooking in the oven during, or just before the open house.

This I believe was something that was actually mentioned on the Backstage Magic tour that I went on a few years ago. They definitely use scents in certain areas of the park, particularly Main Street USA with the bakery scents. This is actually pretty common in most theme parks. I'm convinced they are used in malls as well at places like Auntie Anne's and Coldstone Creamery!

thats a genius idea its ridiculous to think about how many of the little details we don't always realize that make disney so unique from other places .... do these exist in the hotels too other than AKL? ... the contemporary and wilderness lodge always smell distinct too

that would make sense they always smell way better than they taste in the malls lol

I love the smell they release at Yacht Club so much that I bought the machine and smelling cartridge! Now whenever I need a Disney fix, I just have to turn on the machine, and I'm magically transported back there.

Oh geez, I sound like a commercial, or a nut - or both!

Yes this is true - the candy shop at MK, the old bakery at MK, and the Christmas shops at MK and DTD just to name a few. Had a conversation years ago with a manager at MK mentioning that the candy store always smelled the same way and he told me about the scents they use. I love that they do this - scent creates a strong connection with people - it creates an additional layer in your memory and can serve as an instant memory trigger. I love it - I look forward to it every year when we visit.

that's awesome I had no idea they could do that I always assumed the hotels smells were the cleaning supplies or something... that's pretty cool
