I can't believe what my mom just told me on the phone! She said a few days ago, there was a knock at the door. She usually lets my dad answer the door but he was watching a football game and had the TV up loud and didn't seem to hear the knock. She usually looks out the kitchen window but, for some reason, she didn't look this time. Their front door has shaded glass panes on it. She could see the outline of a large man standing way back from the door so she decided to open it.
The man said hello and asked her how she was. My mom thought he was probably selling something because he had one of those shopping baskets that you pull and it was full of books or papers. The guy continued to say that his company was closed that day but he decided to work because he's ambitious and wants to get ahead in life, etc. My mom thought he was just making small talk before trying to sell her something.
Then, suddenly, the guy came running at full-speed with his arm outstreched in front of him, making a fist. Luckily, my mom had fast enough reflexes to slam the door before he reached it and it locked automatically. She heard the guy mumble something and then she looked out the kitchen window as he walked away.
She quickly went to tell my dad what had happened and I'm a little surprised at his reaction. He's a retired police officer but my mom said he just blew it off as the guy being drunk or crazy (I'll have to have a talk with my dad about that!). I asked my mom if she immediately called 911 and she said no. I said, "Mom, some guy tried to get into your house while aiming his fist at you! You should have called the police so they could come and look for him before he really does get into someone's house!" She said she was shaken up by it. I gave her a good lecture after that. She said she always checks out the window before opening the door but, for some reason, she didn't do it this time. She said maybe it was because it was broad daylight or because my dad was home. I think she was shaken up enough to be more careful next time.
The guy is lucky he didn't get inside! My dad still keeps a little, loaded souvenier from his days as a cop (if you know what I mean)!
