I just received this email... I didn't authorize the charge, so I opened a browser & entered my paypal account (not using the link that was found in the email)... as I'd hoped, no such charge like this was made... but here is the message.. I just find it so odd that it actually has a persons name and address & looks so official... How do people do these types of scams? It even looks like it is coming from a paypal address?

I had a similar email about a month ago. My email had a link I was supposed to click if I wanted to dispute the charge. I'm guessing if I had followed the link, they would have asked for my login or password information to confirm. I suggest you forward this to spoof@paypal.com. Paypal replied back that the email I had received was indeed a fraud and they would be pursuing action to have this stopped.

Same thing happened to me. I forwarded the email to ebay (the spoof dept). The email said I had not paid for a winning auction, for a product I'd never even heard of. I checked "my ebay" before clicking on anything, and sure enough, there was no such record of the transaction (you'd think these scammers would realize that people know what they bought or didn't buy.

ps--it might be a good idea to change your paypal password just in case.

A friend of a friend got hit with this as well. It is a scam to get your paypal information. I would definitely forward it to the paypal fraud department.

Thanks nu cruzer, I sent the email off to spoof@paypal.com like you said.

Coincidentally, I just now received a similar type of ebay email... do they have a spoof address too? I don't know why I have all of a sudden gotten two of these virtually at the same time :confused3

Here's the easiest and quickest way to determine if it's a spoof e-mail or not...ebay and paypal will ALWAYS have your screen name in the body of the e-mail itself. If it isn't there, then it's most likely spoof, and should be forwarded to either ebay or paypal. Whatever you do, don't click on any of the links until you hear back from them.

This time of the year, this is rampant all over.

DO NOT open the e-mail - just delete it or send to Pay Pal.

You can always check your pay pal account legitimately.

write the auction number down and try to search it on e-bay and you'll find it doesn't exist. That way your accounts are not compromised either.

Also, if it is legitimate, there will be a message on your e-bay page also to you - if it isn't there, it is scam

If you do open something IMMEDIATELY CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS

The real problem is that for everyone of us that don't clickonlink or respond there are 10 more that do.

I had a similar email this morning saying I had purchased an IPod for $300. I checked the item # and it was a valid ebay auction (though not for an IPod) that ended back in early Oct. My paypal account was correct though and no charges had occurred.

The email looked 100% legit, but was "spoof". I seem to get one every 3-4 weeks either from "paypal" or "ebay".

This is why I also have several E-mail accounts for the different sights (1 for e-bay,1 for paypal and another for banking.I have 1for general and another for Family.
Sometimes it's hard to keep up with but it helps in matters like this .

I haven't yet but will soon change my e-mails as well as passwords for some account To make user name different from e-mail (They are spoofing off of your username and making them look real ligit)

I got one today too, and it came in my inbox (which to me is scarier, since in bulk I know it's a scam!) I had one before, so I knew it was a scam. I've been buying and selling alot lately too, so it makes me be even more cautious!

I have to say that I am used to getting some of this stuff that I know is obviously fraudulent.... but this one really looked authentic, which is why I brought it here... I just couldn't believe how real it looked!!

This happened to me as well, only I took the bait and followed the link on the email and ended up having to change my passwords and privacy questions. I forwarded mine to spoof also. How awful!! So sorry!! Scams just in time for the holidays, I guess crooks have a lot of special people on thier gift lists!!

I got caught out once and all my incoming e-mails ended up diverted, and I had to change settings and all sorts of pain! Now I never answer anything from e-bay just in case :goodvibes

you'd think these scammers would realize that people know what they bought or didn't buy

Actually, some people don't know - a friend of mine is apt to get into bidding wards when she's up late and...er.....relaxed ( :drinking: ), so doesn't know until she checks the nextt night what she's got - or sometimes until the stuff arrives as she's prone to do a load of bidding then go away for the weekend :earseek:

I'm very careful fo my state of mind if I'm going on ebay as its so easy to get carried away - we nearly paid way OTT for a CD because we really wanted it! :earseek:

The address in the message is totally bogus as well. There's no New York Avenue in NYC.

you can always forward the email to paypal and they will tell you if its real or not. I received one and did just that and paypal got back to me and said not to respond to it, it was spam. I never respond to those emails, if you are concern about your account then open a new window and log onto paypal to look at your account. I dont even use paypal thru ebay, i always go right to paypal to pay for my auctions. I had one that told me thank you for using paypal for $120 payment for some gold tone watch from an auction from ebay, then they went on about how i should use the link to log onto my account :rotfl:
i forwarded the email to paypal and they said it was bogus.
