Has anyone experience scarlett fever. My dd6 has it. She was complaining of a soar throat on sunday. Yesterday i took her to the DR. cause she threw up in the morning and it had a little blood which I think it is cause her throat was raw, but later in the day she had gotten this rash on her face around her eyes, mouth and neck so I took her in. She has strep throat as well. The Dr. put her on amoxicillin (sp) and also gave a script to dd 3 so she will not get it. I had to let the school and daycare know cause she went there on monday.

Everyone I tell is like Oh my god scarlett fever. I dont know anything about it except from what my best friend told me that she read online. Which we all know is the worst place to look. So I come to the next best place the dis.

My neice had it a couple of times. If I recall correctly, scarlett fever isn't much more than strep throat. I remember my SIL telling me it sounded worse than it was, and it cleared up with antibiotics.

Hope your little ones are feeling better soon.

Found this:

Scarlet fever is caused by an infection with group A streptococcus bacteria. The bacteria make a toxin (poison) that can cause the scarlet-colored rash from which this illness gets its name.

Not all streptococci bacteria make this toxin and not all kids are sensitive to it. Two kids in the same family may both have strep infections, but one child (who is sensitive to the toxin) may develop the rash of scarlet fever while the other may not. Usually, if a child has this scarlet rash and other symptoms of strep throat, it can be treated with antibiotics. So if your child has these symptoms, it's important to call your child's doctor.

Our ped. said the same thing.......it's just about the same as strep throat. Actually, he said if strep throat isn't treated it can turn into scarlett fever. I freaked out and said "isn't that how Mary Ingalls turned blind!"" And he said "yes, but Mary Ingalls didn't have antibiotics". :thumbsup2

my ds6 developed Scarlet Fever the day before Thanksgiving. It is, in fact, strep throat. Some strains can cause a rash in SOME people.

Strep, left untreated, if of the right strains, can lead to rheumatic fever which can damage hearts. Scarlet Fever, on the other hand, isn't particularly more dangerous.

My ds, btw, had to spend Thanksgiving in the ER -- his hands and feet swelled HUGE and his rash returned. Turns out he is allergic to amoxicillin. He couldn't even walk, his feet looked like giant round blobs! And HURT. He cried and cried, moaning and crawling down the hall.

From my understanding, it's strep throat (same basic illness) that also presents with a rash. Some kids just get the strep throat and others also have the rash. My son, just to be different, has tested positive for the strep bacteria twice with JUST the rash and no throat symptoms. They've called that scarlet fever. The antibiotics should clear it up, but the rash does itch, and it may eventually peel. If I remember correctly, the rash lasts around 5-6 days. Aveeno (oatmeal) baths seemed to help the itching.

Hope your child is better soon!

My dd, now 13, doesn't get strep throat, she gets scarlet fever!!! She gets a fever, gets listless, then at night, when that fever gets to about 101, I feel her back. It will usually feel like sandpaper!! That's how I know...she gets rough, red skin. The pedi calls it body strep!!! It's treated the same as strep throat though. No big deal....unless it goes untreated.

The weird thing is that she never got a fever. That is one of the reason why I sent her to school on Monday cause she did not have a fever so I figure there could not be an infection. She still has not have a fever.

I was thinking this, thank you for that. I feel so dumb for thinking it.

I hope your baby feels better soon.

I had it when I was in first grade. Missed 2 weeks of school because of it.

Hope she feels better soon! :)

DS5 had it on his birthday back in December! :sad1: I freaked out when they told me (the whole Mary Ingles thing...:lmao: ), but the doc said that it really is nothing to worry about. It just sounds bad! The antibiotics cleared it right up. :thumbsup2

Right, it's not the "big deal" that it used to be.

I had a friend whose little girl had no symptoms at all. She was 3 or 4 and broke out in the rash, so her mother took her to the pediatrician. She took antibiotics, and that cured it easily. My friend was like some of the others mentioned in this thread. Her first reaction was, "Oh no!!", but the doctor immediately assured her that it was not a problem.

We received a note last month from school, stating there was an epidemic..

My kids did not get it (knock, knock)..

Hugs to your DD:hug:

I had scarlett fever when I was a child.... Im still alive. :confused3

I had it sophomore year of college...still alive...lots of rest and antibiotics will do the trick!

My son had it last year. I was told it was that the rash after strep was sometimes referred to as Scarletina and seen as sort of a Scarlet Fever Jr. My son didn't have bad fevers, etc. - just the rash.

My DS4 had it for his birthday this January. He had a fever on Sunday, and on Monday morning I went to the doctor, she said it was strep and scarlet fever. Like you guys said, I was so scared. She told me it's absolutely nothing to be worried about, it just can come with strep throat. And that antibiotics takes care of it. She said it's much easier to treat than all the viruses that go around.

But when I told others, they then freaked. And then I'd explain what the doctor told me.

Maybe they can rename it? ;)

I had it when I was 12. I remember being miserably sick in bed for a week, basically too sick to move or drink anything. Then I had what was called an "aftermath" of scarlet fever, in which my the entire palm side of my hands peeled starting at my fingertips. It was gross.
