Scared of surgery - an update

Background: a few weeks ago I posted that I had to have a tonsilectomy and that I was afraid of surgery.

I did update that the "going under" was not that bad. I did cry when it was about to happen (I was so scared!!! Tears just started coming down my cheeks - KWIM?) Anyway, the nurse held my hand and asked me what my favorite vacation was and I said "Disneyworl....." I am certain I did not finish the word.

I woke up and it was not that bad. It was a little freaky and I have to admit, still a scary to me. I did not throw up or have any adverse reactions to the anesthetic so I was lucky there.

It was a very long week of recovery. I am supposed to be going back to work today, but that is not going to happen until at least Wednesday. I still have ear pain, throat pain and I am not sleeping very much as it is stilll difficult to breath as I am still a bit swollen.

I am eating again, although not a lot. I still have popsicles for breakfast as after waking up my throat is so dry it burns. I can barely have anything doughy (like buns or bread) as it tends to get stuck in my throat. I have not tried too many fruits as I am scared of the acid/citrus problems. So my diet is still soups, noodles, etc. Boring!!

I have lost a little over 5 lbs in the last week - although I do not recommend this as a diet plan!! It is not worth the pain!!

As for the recovery (a warning to others - LOL):

Thursday (day of surgery) - fine, I woke up fine and ate some jello, drank lots of water, etc
Friday and Saturday - I honestly thought everyone who said this was going to be rough was a bunch of whiners. It was not that bad, I was talking and could swallow OK (only broth and water, but still...)
Sunday - a bit rougher, but not horrible
Monday to Thursday - OMG!! I thought I was dying!! I was in terrible pain. My ears hurt, by throat felt like razor blades, it was awful!!
Friday and Saturday - better, but not great
Sunday - bad again, but not as bad as the Mon to Thurs
Today - well, I will let you know

I have to say, I would NEVER do it again!! NEVER!! EVER!! EVER!! Not even if you paid me $1,000,000.00!! Nope. Notta. Never.

Well, today and tomorrow I am focussing on feeling better and getting back to the norm. I am finding it hard not to go back to work, but there is no way.

Anyway, thank you for all the feedback. I am looking forward to feeling like myself again. I really looking forward to those good nights sleep!!!

Amy

Awww, I'm so sorry you're feeling so poorly! But I have to say I appreciate your sharing your experience because I've never had to have surgery that required anesthesia and am terrified of it as well. Your post made me feel a little less apprehensive should it ever be necessary.

Tonsillectomies are so hard on adults ... I really feel for you. My aunt had a tonsillectomy in her 30s and had such a difficult recovery that she lost 40 pounds! I hope yours is much faster and smoother! :goodvibes
