Scam???

This morning I received a call from 876-861-8611. I answered, and a man on the other line said that he was calling from Jamaica, and that I had won 2 million dollars. I asked what for, and he said that credit card companies put our names into a drawing for paying our bills on time. I was very skeptical at this point, and was trying to ask him questions about it, but the connection on his phone was bad, and he said that he would call me back when he wasn't driving.

When I hung up I googled Jamaica scams, and found that there were a lot of scams under area code 876. Oh, and he also said that I had a pretty voice, and asked me if he could call me or if we could text. (Which obviously, I won't because of international charges!)

Anybody else have this happen to them before? Am I correct in thinking this is a scam?

This Jamaican guy just isn't giving up!!! I had my phone on silent for most of the afternoon, and just checked it about fifteen minutes ago. I had 12 missed calls from this guy! TWELVE!!!! He obviously can't take a hint! When he called AGAIN, I picked up and told him to stop calling me, then hung up. SHEESH!

Obviously scam! Why would your credit card company have someone call you from JAMAICA while he was in his car driving if it was a real contest??

Exactly...if you won a prize of that value you would be getting certified, signed paperwork to go over...not a call from a guy in a car.

His name wasn't Mr Bill was it? Because if you google that phone number a Madison, WI incident police report comes up :

A 45-year old Madison woman recently contacted the police department on behalf of her elderly parents. She said a man identifying himself as "Mr. Bill" kept calling her parents because he needed deliver a large money order to them. The daughter called "Mr. Bill's number: 876-861-8611, and found that "Mr. Bill" had a very thick accent - one she couldn't quite identify. The daughter asked "Mr. Bill" for the name of his company, and he provided her with Price Group Unlimited. When the daughter asked "Mr. Bill" for the website address for Price Group Unlimited, he hung up. A responding officer traced “Mr. Bill’s” phone number to Jamaica.

Glad that this elderly couple had someone to watch out for them, but this scam must work some of the time or the scammers would give up kwim?

I disagree, it isn't a scam. In fact, i won the Russian lottery and bought the Brooklyn Bridge with the money. Just sold it to New Jersey on ebay! Yep, we are going to Disney World with the money.

With the super cheap calling now a days you get scam calls from all over the world. You use to get emails now you get phone calls and letters in the mail. A couple months ago we got the standard "I am a manager in a major bank and we are trying to find somebody who can collect 10 million dollars..." scam but this time it was a paper letter sent from Tanzania. Trashed the letter but kept the stamps, they were cool... (Thanks Google for making my personal information available to the world... ) The newest one is the use of 855 numbers, which are supposed to be toll free but i am not sure who pays. Some say the caller pays and some say the person being called pays for the call.

To the OP, i love the fact they guy hit on you while he was trying to scam you. I wonder if he will be fire for being unethical at his work place???

I was pretty amused, although really just confused at first. Keep in mind that the phone call woke me up, and I was still a little sleepy when I was first talking to him. He was like "I like how your voice sounds, can I keep calling you?" This was out of nowhere, and I obviously said...no. And then he asked me if I was single, and I lied and told him that I was married! And then he asked me where my husband was, and at this point, I was way amused with where this was going, and so I said that he was laying in bed next to me, wondering who the heck I was talking to!

And that's when he told me that I was the winner of 2 million dollars. bahahaha. It was a pretty amusing scam!

When I googled the number later, I read about this elderly lady who sent $700 to them, because they said that they needed it to take care of "taxes", and then never heard from them again. I don't know how you could fall for something like that? I would need a lot more proof than a phone call!

When you kept talking to the guy you gave him reason to believe he was going to be successful with you. Get yourself a whistle. You can find them for about $1 in the sporting goods section at Wal Mart. Leave it by the phone and use it each and every time he calls. It's very effective for all kind of scam calls! I use it quite cheerfully whenever necessary.
