Scam or not

How can you find out if a website is a scam or not? I found a site that sells "affordable formal wear". Is it too good to be true? The BBB has no record of this business. Google sashayz and let me know your opinion please. I hope it's okay to ask here, I just don't want to make a mistake that could cause me financial trouble. Scams are getting so elaborate, it's hard to tell what's real.
Thank you

I would be uncomfortable with the shipping time of 4 weeks ($24 "rush shipping" to get it in 12 days?). The explanation "they are custom made" makes no sense since they seem to be standard sizing. They are not taking measurements and creating the dress to specs.
I would look elsewhere.

Seems strange that no one has posted a customer review either good or bad. I would look elsewhere also. I wouldn't take a chance.

You guys are right. I don't know why I was questioning my instinct. Sometimes the thought of a good deal makes common sense go out the window. Thank you so much.
I'm back to square one. Does anyone happen to know a real place to find prom dress deals?

JC Penney seems to have really nice dresses around Prom season. Are there any consignment shops in your area? We had one in my hometown and there's a few where I live now that specialize in just formal wear.

I've been looking for formal dress ideas (very non-traditional someday-to-be second time bride here!) and I've found dresses on Macy's, Nordstrom, and Dillard's sites that are similar in style and price. Look under "bridesmaid/wedding party," not just "prom" :)

I live in a small town, not many consignment shops and most of the girls are heading to the mall for the big department stores. My daughter was looking online so she could be different. It's her last year of high school, I want it to be special, but I can't afford big $$$ for a dress for one night. Oh well, we still have a few months so I'm not in a hurry. I'll keep searching and if I find something I'm not sure about, I'll ask here.
Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to check out that link DaisiLou. You guys rock.

You could also try the David's Bridal website. Under the sale section there is an outlet section for regular dresses. Most are in the $40-60 range. The sale section starts around $80 and goes up from there. You could also watch for sales at bridal shops in towns near yours.

I will always go over to Networksolutions.com and do a "whois" search. In this instance I was referred to Godaddy.com, which is another registrar. Here is the information they displayed;

So they have existed for almost a year and they are in the US. Many of the questionable sites I check will have only registered within the last month or so and will be outside the US, especially in China.

This is not to say that it is not a scam, but I would tend to think that it is a legitimate site. Inkster, MI is a suburb of Detroit near the airport. And the area code in the Whois is for the Detroit area.

You could also check eBay, just search "prom dress" or "pageant dress". Lots of good deals to be had! Good luck!
