Scam attempts abound....

Seems like whenever I enter the Frontierland Hub, I'm bombarded with trade requests....and today was no exception. However today was interesting in that I got the infamous "I just want to borrow (fill in the blank)". Mine was a magic request. I kept saying no and got the classic "but we can be friends so you can track me down." I told her I wasn't falling for that trick, but nice try. I didn't leave the room because there were a couple of other people there and I wanted it to be known that this chick was trying to scam people. Then the beautiful "you must think I'm an idiot" line..."ok fine, I guess you don't want rare then." So I threw it back at her "if you had rare, you'd have magic too." Not that it's necessarily true, but it might throw her off. She kept begging...and then her flaw...she said she just wanted to combine it so she could do something and then she'd give it back. :sad2: When I told her you can't separate them once they've been combined, she quickly tried to leave the room, but not before I had clicked on "report". I noticed she had snowman magic already...and going by how she was with me, she probably scammed someone else out of that. So she's been reported, VMK said they'll check it out...and I just reminded people to be careful of their stuff because of the "trick people" out today. One player said he's noticed a lot of scammers out today. So just a reminder...be careful!

Someone asked to borrow my magic today as well. I didn't get any farther in the trade window with her than, "lol no" and then I left before she could bother me more. I'm actually sorry i did not do more about it. I will remember to take pics or notes next time so i can send a report.

You don't need to take pics or notes. VMK keeps a log of all text in the game,
whether it's in a room or in a trade window. If you notice a player begging
publicly in a room for people to let him/her "borrow" anything, you can report
the player. I would say in the report: "Player is asking everyone to let him
borrow items. I think he is trying to trick people who don't know better."

You'll probably get a canned responses to click "ignore" on a player, but
that's ok. At least you know that the staff will review this player's actions
and ban if he cheats anyone out of their stuff.

And mking624, do you turn off your trade requests? You shouldn't be
bombarded if you do that.

This is so true!

I was playing as CL_Maltoo the other day and this girl asked if she could try on my black ears, she would give them right back.

I asked her if she thought I was born last day. :rotfl:

Honestly some players.:sad2:

The all time best attempted scam on me was when a player told me that if I lent him my rare stuff, he could copy it with his "special" computer program. He wanted to copy it for both of us, then give me more back in return for the favor. Sheesh! Yea, I reported him.

Whenever someone asks me to "borrow" something, I say sure. As long as they let me hold on to all of their rare and magic in a trade before they get what they want to "borrow." That usually ends the conversation.

I don't turn off trade requests because I don't mind trading. I don't do it a lot, but I don't want to turn it off and turn it on every time I enter one room. Usually I'm only in there for a quest or something.

I figured I'd get the common "ignore player" response as well (I said "the player was asking to borrow items, a common trick for taking peoples stuff" in my report), but the response I got was "Thank you for reporting this to us. We will check it out."

:lmao: :lmao: Well let me hand my stuff right over.... :lmao:

I was just starting on building my stitch hat offer room and I had put down two or three items when this girl wearing a pink dress came in and told me that it's a bad offer. I said I wasn't done yet. She then asked to borrow my bird hat. I said no sorry. Then she said if I think she is going to steal it, I'm wrong. Then she left. Sadly I didn't even think of reporting her because I was so focused on building my offer.

My all time favorite scam that was tried with me was a player asked to trade for some rare hat i had on at the time - so I told them that I was looking for the Grand Cali hotel pin and would be glad to trade the hat for it... Trade window opens, I put up the hat.. no pin. I told them you need to put up the pin beore I hit accept. The other player then proceeded to tell me that i can follow her to her room, as this is where she keeps all her pins!!! Gosh I want that feature!!!

I got such a good laugh at that as I typed out my report.

I have been getting a lot of the, give me your stuff first then I will go get mine or take off mine and trade you back. The last time this happened, she started talking in the room about how she didn't understand why I wouldn't take her trade and pretty much saying I was not a good trader. I just let it pass, but next time I will report those things. I kinda just thought it was me - lol.

I posted about a week (?) ago about my dear SIL who let a long time "friend" finally try on her sparrow hat, and of course he disapeared; well last night he finally reapeared in his room full of disney movie reward sound systems, kali, etc. When confronted he said he never did that, then he said he once had a sparrow but traded it for the sound system, a bird hat and some other stuff..is this a good trade, BTW? Anyhow I called her and she got right on and of course he booted her out right away and then feverishly started removing all his items from his room!!! :rotfl2: It was so funny...he had no idea that me and the other three people were really my SIL's family!! Finally she got back in and he sais, I never took your sparrow, and how did you get off my friend list? She goes, gee, I wonder...then he offers to trade her stuff, opens up a trade window, offers her tons of stuff for nothing, then he all of a sudden closed, booted her and then all of us. She reported him three times last night and has reported him three other times right after the original incident, to no avail. Moral of the story..don't trust anyone with your stuff, sorry to say, even old friends!! I will continue to dog this guy until his character is banned AGAIN (his first was banned). I wish I could worn you all with his title.....

Things like this frustrate me for a couple of reasons...
1. Someone invested the time to become "trustworthy" and then steal the stuff. I mean you shouldn't "lend" things out anyway, but it's unfortunate that you have to be wary of people you've "known" for some time.
2. There are people here who've been banned permanently for wrong reasons...and yet this guy who is apparently a known scammer can still access vmk. That's just messed up.

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl::laughing: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl::laughing: That is the funniest thing I have ever seen!! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:
I have been scammed far too many times. Well once a few months ago I lent my bird hat to a friend and he had to give me one of his special items which was an everest chair and he gave my friend back the next day. So having them give you items that are special to them for you to hold while they borrow something else might work if you really trust the person. But of course it is still never safe to lend your items to anyone, even good friends.

I agree that it's still never safe. I think it's also important to caution new players that might happen on this thread that holding someone else's "special" items isn't always a safe bet either...as that could be merely one of several they might own and losing one isn't a big deal to them (i.e. Everest chairs were handed out like candy during ride-a-thons last year so there are many players will boat loads of them).

I actually booted two people from my room once because of "borrowing" when they went into the trade window, I booted both of them so, hopefully, they couldnt find each other again.

How is that possible? Trades are not completed until both parties click accept, so, no, neither of them or anyone else can say that.
