Scalford, Leicestershire??

Both branches of my maternal ancestor tree originated in Scalford, Leicestershire and sailed to the US in 1803. DD will be on a college tour in London next month and I was wondering where our ancestoral home was in relation to London? Since they ended up farmers in northwestern Illinois, I'm going to assume it's not on a coast Thanks for any help you can give us

London to Scalford is around about 120 miles away, so not that close and is, as you suspect, not on the coast. It would certainly take a good couple of hours to get there by car and prob longer by public transport.

Yes, Scalford is inland, a village near to Melton Mowbray. It's probably about a 2 to 2 and a half hour drive from London.

There's a local history section on the website where you can add your own photos/ stories etc. I'm sure they would be very interested to hear about the US connection.

Many thanks for the informationI'm going to gather my geneology pages (fortunately we have very detailed records) and contact the administrator on the website given to get started. I agree it won't mean a visit for DD this time, but we want to go as a family some year and it would be neat to establish family ties before then. I can't wait to get started

Its down the road from where i live, and yes 2-3hours from london, very rural area, lots of farms , have fun researching, PM me if you need anything looking into locally i have a work mate who loves family history stuff so i can get expect help on the case if needed
