Have found the debate on the new 18 % gratuity thing hilarious.everyone who has posted say " i allways tip 20% but how dare disney say i have to tip 18%"
Is it just a case that most people dont tip 18 %+ but more likely they tip in the 10-15% range, and thats why they are complaining
Me i`am more woried about lossing the app on the ddp, thats why we will not be using it till it changes prob in 2009.
Just a IMHO thought

I don't think so. It really does bother me that they are trying to take something that should be my decision and make it their own.

In short, I really do usually tip 20%, unless service is poor. I don't like the idea that servers know they're going to get 18% anyway, and I really do believe that some servers will not be as diligent because of it.

That said, my complaint is not so much about the DDE, as I am not a DDE person. It's more about the fact that they've lowered the party size subject to the automatic gratuity from 8 to 6. However the DDE thing is also disturbing because it indicates a trend in the wrong direction, such that it may not be too long before all meals at TS locations will be subject to an automatically-calculated gratuity, regardless of party size or method of payment.

As disney a major player in the florida market this will make the 18% standard move into the rest of the area, universal.seaworld and bush gardens soon folow suit

The 18% is nothing new! We have been to WDW twice this year, just DH and I, on the DDP both times. At all of our TS meals we ordered wine or cocktails not covered under our plan. We received a seperate bill for our charges not covered by the DDP and it always had the 18% added. They have been doing this for sometime for the DDP, and have just gotten around to adding it to the DDE. If it upsets you, don't use any discount, pay out of pocket, so no 18% is added and tip what you want.

I have stated this on main thead about the 18%.and i was told that (by disney and we will find out 1st jan if corect)when you order food on any meal plan, using a dde card 1 person up or paying cash in a party of 6 up a 18% gratuity will be added
reason for my OP was i personly think most people dont tip 18%+ it less and that why folks are getting hot under the collar

Yes, I know. That bothers me as well.

We're using the DDP in December when we visit. If service is good, I will have no problem with paying the automatically calculated 18% gratuity on non-plan items. In that case the policy is backfiring on them because they're losing 2% or more - I would have tipped at least 20% if they didn't attempt to take the decision out of my hands in the first place.

If service isn't good, I will be leaving less of a tip on non-plan items than the automatically calculated amount. It's pretty simple, really. Tips/gratuities are not mandatory even if they are automatically calculated. They can't force an 18% tip if I want to leave 10%, 5%, or nothing.

Please post on the main DDE thread. This is repeating what is being discussed there,
