Saving $$$

I never did understand these types of post from DVC members. Buying DVC you know you are going to buy tickets every year. A lot of hassle to save a few bucks. Brings to mind the saying "tripping over dollars to save pennies."

I do not consider the amount saved to be a few bucks. I will be purchasing a 10 day MYWbase ticket for $811.30, for two adults, from Undercover Tourist. After going through the gate, the tickets will equal, $845.62. Because I am a DVC, member, the purchase price for an AP is $850.00 for two adults. So, I save $30, which is not just a "few bucks" for our family.

The process to get the AP is not a hassle for us. We have to stop in The guest assistance building anyways. How about the saying,"a penny saved is a penny earned."

I've seen some other recent posts that resorts are no longer issuing APs due to issues they had. But no personal knowledge.

This past August we could not buy our Annual Passes at the resorts any longer, so you must purchase APs at the parks, International Gateway or Downtown Disney.

I'm sorry if I sounded snooty, not my intention. I was trying to point out the value of a persons time, and when I am on vacation that is a very valuable thing to me. I know going every year to Disney with our DVC points, there is thousands of additional dollars in tickets, food, and transportation. Time spent with my wife and kids means more to me than saving money. I can make more when I get home.

Just thought a different perspective on the subject would be of some value. Sorry for upsetting you.

I get what you are saying about time having a value and something not being worth the time spent. I'm telling you it really isn't much of a hassle. To order tickets from UT instead of disney and comparing the tickets prices to save the maximum over gate value is hardly work or time consuming at all. You use that ticket in the gat and before its last use you stop at guest services and upgrade it an AP doesn't take long at at all. Who doesn't have 10 minutes on their way out of the park? So a 10 day ticket from UT(with mousavers link) vs Disney saves $16.43 per person for adult, and $15.26 for a child's ticket. That's $63.38 for a family of four for 10 minutes of my time to upgrade a ticket. If that family of 4 has kids over 10 that's a $65.72 savings. Now for 10 minutes to gain over $60! I think I can give up some time for a $360 hourly rate!

There are definitely penny pinching skemes not worth the time, but this one is effortless in reality.

I'm with Bake on this one. Not only for the matter of time, but just the added stress involved if there's an issue. I'm constantly reading about new CM's that aren't following rules and having to get a supervisor or make a call and tell you that they've made an exception, etc...
I'm on vacation, I pay for it to be stress free as much as possible and enjoy every minute. For me its only my gf and I. I do understand when you're buying a lot of tickets and its saving a hundred dollars. Anything less, than I don't want to deal with the hassle.

Okay, I have read through all this and am trying to see if I have it down right. We have a trip in Sept planned, I would like to get the AP bc we will be back in December and one more trip in the late Summer of 2014.

Since ticket prices will go up in a few weeks, will the DVC AP price change as well? If I buy the UT tickets NOW and upgrade them when we go to the park in Sept, will we get as much of a discount? I like the idea of paying for the TIW card with the difference.

Right now as listed on the UT website, the discounted cost for 2 adults and 2 children (5 day MYW) is $1045.80. 4 APS at $425 each is $1700. So I would pay $595(ish) for the upgrade? But if APs go up the discount would be less, correct?

Also, if I use a day of the MYW on 9/2 and upgrade as we leave the park, What day will the AP be activated as day 1? The next time we enter a park?

If you pay $1045.80 on UT for your tickets now, when the prices go up, your discounted tickets are still valid and now worth the same as the whatever the new price is after they go up. Without knowing what the increases will be, I can't tell you if the savings will go up or down.

The current Disney price on those 4 tickets is $1103.34. So you are saving $57.54. When you use the tickets for at least one day through the gate it will bring your tickets up to the value of $1103.34. When you upgrade to APs you will pay the difference between $1700(plus tax) and $1103.34. But if you don't use the UT for at least one day they will know you only paid $1045.80 and you will have to pay the extra $57.54. THIS is where the savings is. Personally I don't think it's a hassle to do to save almost $60, buts that's just me.

Now when ticket prices go up, you may save more or less depending on what the new gate price of those 5 days tickets goes up to (which will make the price you paid now vs the gate price even more than $57.54). If the AP price increases MORE than the 5day ticket increase you save less. If the 5 day increase is MORE than the new AP price increase you will save more. Either way you will save money buying from UT, using them once then upgrading. How much depends on what happens wi th the price increase. Today it would $57.54

Edit....the price of an AP with tax is $1810.52 for the 4 you are planning

Yes exactly. I actually haven't spent any time comparing the UT prices vs Disney prices to find the biggest savings. Just going with what she was buying. Your example shows @ $110.32 savings with Mousesavers link, or $75 without it. As I stated earlier, I don't think it's all that much work to save $75 or better yet $110 with the link, and with a TIW card being $100, The savings can be applied to that.

And on your 2nd question, your AP will be backdated to the first day you used your MYW ticket.

Thank you both so much! That is very helpful and I understand why it would be less to do the 5 day hoppers instead. It's certainly worth the slight effort to sign up for a newsletter, order tix ahead of time and then upgrade them at the end of the first day

The newsletter only comes out on the 15th of each month, so if you sign up now, you will get the link next Wednesday. If by chance disney decides to up prices this weekend, UT usually has the old prices until their stock runs out so you should be able to get them. I doubt this is the weekend they will go up, but you never know. I would order them ASAP with a price rise around the corner. When prices rise, UT gets swamped with orders. It took over a month for us to get ours last year when prices jumped. Didn't matter as we didn't go until Nov, but rather be safe then sorry.
