"Saving Mr. Banks" ranked as one of the best films of 2013

OK not sure if this post is real or not but the Great movie ride at DHS not the original- Grauman theater in Hollywood is where the premiere was and DHS is a replica of that.

Sorry if I misunderstood post.

Linda

Linda - Yes I know that the premiere of Mary Poppins was at the real Grauman theater in Hollywood and that DHS is a replica. What I want to know is: 1. Did they rent out the real Grauman theater to film the scence in Saving... or 2. Did they build it on a sound stage? or 3. Did they use DHS for free...blocking off parts of the park with big red curtains to film the outside sequences.

Ditto! I saw it again today, and the theater workers were waiting for everyone to leave so they could clean, and NOBODY got up! They were listening to the tape recording, and the theater was full and everyone clapped when it ended. Don't miss this one.

Nice! :goodvibes

I actually drove 2 hours to go see it. And me, being 19, was one of the youngest people in the theater. It really isn't the 'everything is wonderful' typical disney movie. After the end sequence, not a single person got up. No noise. Everyone sat and watched the credits till the black screen came on. And that it why I consider this movie great. Everyone watched, the entire time. I encourage anyone to go see it, even if it is a bit of a drive!

I believe that they filmed the entire movie in California, so they probably used the real theatre.

I have read that the entire movie was filmed in California, so no Hollywood Studios.

Amazing movie! I am always afraid of anticipating a movie too much and then being disappointed because it cannot live up to my expectations. Saving Mr. Banks exceeded even my high expectations!

Everybody has a backstory. Be kind and try to understand. I thought they did an excellent job and didn't whitewash. Even in the premiere, while she liked some things she still didn't like the animation and said so.

I think Paul Giamatti should get an Oscar for best supporting actor.

I laughed because it was one of the oldest crowds at a movie I've been to in a while. Almost everyone stayed through the credits. The pictures were great, but the tape recording was awesome.

And the movie did a good job of communicating, in a small way with small glimpses, the creative work and desire that is a part of Disney. I also like how P.J. Travers voiced real criticisms of Disney that many agree with. No pulled punches.

The theater was full for an afternoon showing and the crowd stayed through the credits. You don't see that often. Of course a number of older folks had the visit the restroom during the movie, you don't see that very often either! :rotfl:

Very enjoyable movie! DD, 20, and I saw it with a full theater of people who sounded like they were enjoying it as much as we were. :)

Like the PP said, most people stayed all the way through to the black screen. :thumbsup2

I didn't cry, but durned if I didn't get something in my eyes that made them water perfusely.

Excellent work by all and an honest portrayal of an alcoholic rather than the usual 1 dimensional wife beater that is the hollywood standard.

My 9 yr old wants to go with me to see this really bad. Most reviews I have read say it's really on the tame end of Pg-13. Do y'all agree?

Depends on the child I guess. It's not the movie is inappropriate, it just contains adult themes (really realistic portrayal of an alcoholic). Personally, I wouldn't take a child to it, because I don't think a child would get much from the movie. A lot of it would go right over his/her head.

I would definitely not take a 9 y/o to this movie. It has very realistic portrayals of alcoholism,.tuberculosis, and deep depression. There are many scenes I would not want to have to explain should a.child that age have questions. It is about Mary Poppins, yes, but saving Mr. Banks is not a child's movie, imo.

We watched the movie in a packed theater in San Diego on Christmas Day. The line to get into the theater snaked around and because we were near the end of the line, we were able to note that it was all adults with some high school students sprinkled in here and there. Disney did a good job of marketing Saving Mr. Banks as an "adult-themed" movie and I surely wouldn't recommend taking a child to view it.

No! You are not alone. We saw it earlier today and LOVED it! It was interesting from so many perspectives - I loved seeing how they put the whole movie together.

I do have to agree with above posts - it was all adults at our showing. I can't picture too many kids enjoying it. It was mostly about the author's life growing up and how it related to the characters in Mary Poppins.

watched it yesterday, I was looking forward to it and my wife and I both found it a bit boring. It was good, but it didn't live up to the hype.

Loved the movie. Went in expecting one thing and got a whole different story :)

We also loved Wolf of Wall Street. Wow! Leo deserves an Oscar for that role.

We found it a great movie, a honest ,well produced and directed movie about a very special man and a ...................interesting English lady with her own demons and issues.

Fully living up to the hype!:thumbsup2

I had mixed reactions to the film, possibly because I know a lot of the history it covers.

The good elements:

  • The size of the roles given to the two Sherman Brothers characters. They are a massive part of Disney history and have historically have been woefully underappreciated. It was a joy to see their legacy brought to life.
  • Emma Thompson's execution of Travers.
  • The effective but not overdone "Mad Men" era setting. The art direction in this was just spot on.

The less than good:

  • The overdone flashback Australia storyline. That element could have easily been cut back in length by two thirds and been just as effective. As executed, it became repetitive and fatiguing.
  • The blatant steam cleaning of what actually ended up happening between Travers and Disney. In the film, we are shown Disney flying to Britain to have an 11th hour heart-to heart resolution with Travers.

    That event never happened.

The real story is while she was still in Burbank, Walt got her to sign a contract giving her full right of refusal on the script, while knowing the fine print in the contract gave her no control over editing, which was his work around so he could insert elements into the final film (music, characterizations and animation) he knew she adamantly didn't want. She was shocked at the premiere (yes, crying, outraged over what had been done to her work) and ended up resenting her dealings with Disney for the rest of her life.

She was not a very nice lady or a rationale one. During her time in Burbank she was removed from filming and work sessions because she was verbally attacking the cast member sand crew. She also kept coming up with silly requirements like *She did not want the color red in any of the movie......none!*

She had her own lawyers that had a hard time controlling her demands.

Her editing rights ended at the movie premier. She allegedly claimed she was not aware of that until Walt told her when she was talking about re editing the movie.

She was know at home as a hard to work with person and really a *curmudgeon*.

She has in her will that none of the works be produced by Disney, however it seems this as been gotten around by her estate owners.

AKK.

Of course I cried... :) I'm a sucker for anything Disney. I did hear a lot of sniffles in the audience too.

I enjoyed the movie a lot.
