Saving money by walking

It's pretty obvious that by walking instead of using the bus/car you will save, but what I have done to concentrate my mind inmy new job which is 20 mins walk from where I live is...

I have worked out how much bus fare to and from work would cost me for a week. I then seperate this money out and only use it when I decide to take the bus (if I finish very late for example, and don't want to walk in the dark). At the end of the week, whatever money is left over goes in a tin. Currently with nice weather that means pretty much all of it, but I found it helped me to demonstrate to myself how much I am saving - every little helps!

You are lucky you live so close and can do this. My drive is 35 minutes and in some parts, there are no walkways. I wonder how long that would take to walk one way?

I do the same, but with my bike. Have you considered that, op? Saves me time, and gas, so money! I carry everything on my bike, and take my time so I don't have to sweat too bad.

It takes me 10 minutes to walk from my car parked in the company parking lot to my desk. 20 minutes would be the time it would take me to walk from where I enter the parking lot to my desk.

My work is seven miles away. I have always wished I could get in good enough shape to bike it daily.

start biking 1 mile everyday till it feels easy then 1.5 miles ect ect. three months if you don't cheat and you can make there.

I work with a guy who either bikes or runs to work ten miles (each way!) every single day. He essentially runs the equivalent of four marathons per week. The downside is that he is insanely sweaty for the first two to three hours of the day.

:thumbsup2 Wow, I applaud you for doing this. It's good for you and your wallet. I'm also impressed with anyone who can get going early enough to walk to work and not skid in just before the hour. :rolleyes1

This was what it was like when I was working if I was lucky enough to get a spot close to the door...

Fwiw I was in a situation where it was bike to grad school or don't attend. I got in shape very quickly BY biking the 10 miles.

Ok ew. Before choosing to bike or run to work you have to make sure there is a shower first!

Op dot forget to calculate the new shoes you will be needing more often in your savings calculations.

DH walks and buses to work but it saves us nothin because the company gives him a pass!

Gross!

I would not bike for the purpose of saving gas or money if I have to dodge cars.

One hospital bill will wipe out all the savings and much more.

We live 3.5 miles from the nearest store and most of that distance does not have sidewalks/safe areas to walk with the kids. No public transportation in our town either.

But, weather-permitting, I do walk my 9-year-old home from school each day to save on gas and wear-and-tear on our vehicle, a 1.25 mile walk each way with NO shade or shelter. But since we are a one-vehicle family, the savings are considerable. It means DH does not have to drive from work to DS's school to bring him home, and then back to work again (an extra 18 miles roundtrip every day - so basically we save a gallon of gas every day I walk DS home).

That was my last job. Minnesota in the Winter and a ten minute walk through the parking lot. I have to say, it was one of the reasons I'm not working any longer. I don't mind exercise. I do mind having to dress for the Iditarod to make in into work each day.
