Saving $$- 'Cooking' in the hotel room

I can afford to buy all three meals, but...I really like quesadillas, particularly w/ La Tortilla high fiber tortillas...to get those I will have to make in my room, w/ the trusty iron provided. Yes, I'll wrap my creation in al foil...who knows what kind of revolting clothes the iron has touched. Some people are way too uptight, to use a 60s term. I'm afraid to use the iron on my clothes...haven't you ever noticed that there are always UFO stains on them? My breakfast, safely wrapped w/ al foil though...feels pretty safe to me. I consider myself fun and financially savvy...hello, my degree is in Econ w/ a Chem minor. I can do math, our credit scores are over 800, we have no debt...pay for all vacations before we actually take the vacations...if you want to call me white trash because I eat a quesadilla go for it.

I got through about the first 3 pages and I have to believe that the OP didn't mean really cook but more about what to eat and what can be stored in a mini fridge. Do people really make quesadillas with the iron? :faint: Or hot dogs in the coffee pot?

I mean this with all respect and like to save a buck but if you are having to cook with non kitchen appliances to afford the vacation, then maybe the vacation should be out on hold while more money is saved. It's a fire and health hazard. I like the PP who asked if someone would cook in their bedroom at home. :thumbsup2

Go on - Tell em like it is! :goodvibes

So for those who stay in the Boardwalk Villas. How do they feel when they smell offensive odors there? Those rooms have either a kitchen or kitchenette. I smell all kinds of odors there.

At lease Pop does not have interior corridors

Yes but these villas come with appliances and even full kitchens meant for cooking. Again, who cooks in their bedroom and bathroom at home? :scared:

Sorry but thats the craziets analogy I've read. First generally we don't eat right off of the table. We use these new fangle things called plates. Next most folks know there is a lot of leadway with tables. People actually expect you use to table for bags, mail, etc, etc. We generally expect the table to see lots more wear and tear. WE do not EXPECT an iron full of grilled cheese.
Quoting just one poster for ease.

Many of you seem to have missed that the travelers who use irons to heat/melt cheese in sandwiches or quesadillas first wrap the entire thing in aluminum foil. I mean, if I were going to iron a sandwich, I'd want to protect it from 'iron crud' like starch ;)

I can just imagine the look on my dh's face if I tried to make dinner with the hotel iron. I think he would question my sanity at that point and feel that perhaps I spent too much time in the Florida sun.

OMG, now granted I haven't slept well in a couple of days but I laughed SO hard at this :rotfl: I keep picturing my husband reaction to it too which makes me laugh harder.

:rotfl2:

Good times.

And thanks for that.

This thread is hilarious! I was reading some of it to my DH last night and he couldn't believe that people make food with the hotel iron:rotfl2:

I didn't want to get on this train but finally couldn't resist. I have to tell you guys what happened to Dh and I on one of our very early trips to Disney. Now remember, we were 20 at the time, no kids, very little money. Be kind. :lmao:

So we drove 1200 miles to Disney and had booked an offsite room with a kitchenette. I didn't know as much as I know now about researching hotels, oh to be young.

So we took our food to cook in the kitchenette. We were going to eat like kings that weeks, eggs and bacon, crockpot spaghetti and meatballs. Well when we got to the hotel, it was a little frightening. It was dark and dirty, people hanging around in the stairwells drinking and smoking I don't know what.

Disclaimer: This is not to say there are not some perfectly nice budget hotels in Orlando but this is not one of them.

So my husband said we weren't going to stay there and we set off to find somewhere that would take us off the street. So you all know where I'm going with this right. Three days later we are in the Best Western right there on property cooking bacon and eggs on the balcony with a portable frying pan. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Dh was so afraid we were going to get kicked out. Although I will add that at home, he adores a good cabbage roll.

Trust me folks, I know of what I speak.....it stunk, literally. Never ever again and DH to this day after 17 years of marriage, finds this the most ridiculous thing we ever did. Hey, I wasn't going to waste all that food, we didn't have money to spare. :thumbsup2

Never fear, I am a grown up now and IMHO do not find it worth any amount of savings at Disney to cook with the iron, I'm on the side of I think it's a little gross. Electric pot to boil water in I could go for, iron, no.

I also wanted to point out to you guys that we used to use the fridges in the rooms all the time, yogurts, milk, cheese sticks sort of things, until DS got violently ill one year, sick for a couple of days at Disney. We had actually brought back some plain pizza from Wolfgang Pucks and put it in the fridge, he ate it the next AM for breakfast and was sick as a dog.

I can only assume that the fridge didn't get cold enough to keep it safe, the rest of us had eaten it the night before with no problem. So be warned, I will never keep perishables in the Disney fridges again.

I can't believe people iron their clothes on vacation! :scared1:
Well, since you mention it - Downy Wrinkle Release, especially now that the price is back down in the 'reasonable' range, is such a miracle I've thrown away my iron and board. While DWR is great, I'm pretty sure it'd make a lousy quesadilla ;)

Note to self: Bring a fridge thermometer from home.

On a side note, I just now called Pop and spoke with Dexter who told me it was "perfectly fine to bring a crock pot into the room".

You may think you talked to "Dexter at Pop" but you didn't. He answered the phone that way, but he was not at Pop. His name probably wasn't Dexter, either (they use pseudonyms). And he was probably the same CM who told someone else that they could use 2 "days" of their non-hopper pass to visit 2 different parks on the same day. Take everything you are told by the CMs with a grain of salt - they're wrong half the time.

I personally don't cook on vacation, with irons, crockpots or otherwise.

Um, those come with kitchens so I would expect people to be cooking in them. :confused3

I would NOT expect people to be cooking in a regular room at PoP or POFQ, so yes, that would be annoying. Honestly, I would mention it to housekeeping (especially if I can smell it in my own room).

All I know is, I called the number listed for Pop directly....not the reservation line. The gentleman answered the phone "Welcome to Pop Century, this is Dexter....How may I help you?". Whether his name was real or whether he was physically inside Pop when I called is irrelevant to the fact of the information given. Why don't you call and see what they say? Sometimes people are wrong. All I know is he told me it was ok to bring a crockpot.

I needed a good chuckle today, so thanks for all the hilarious posts.:rotfl2:

Can I get an "amen"! I don't iron at home, unless absolutely necessary. No way I'm doing it on vacation.:goodvibes

I love me some DWR. I got a travel-size bottle and always bring it on vacation. But  on the dwr sandwich!

I still see nothing wrong with a good cabbage roll now and then while at WDW and if you did happen to call housekeeping on me, I'm pretty sure after I invite them in, I could win them over with a taste test. They would say
Gracias, señor and leave knowing the power of a good cabbge roll. The only worry I would have is that housekeeping would raid my crock pot and eat them while cleaning my room. How would I be able to enjoy my day at MK knowing that my cabbge rolls were left defensless in the room and being raided by housekeeping? What would I do for food? What would happen to my budget?:confused3
