My two children have been saving change for about a month. They put any change they receive in their banks and my DH and I also put all of our change in their banks.

We decided to empty the banks and take it to the Coinstar machine. I told the kids they could buy Disney Dollars with the money.

I thought they would have about $20.00.

We couldn't believe it when the machine was done counting the money and they had over $94.00!!!

I added $6.00 and they purchased $100 in Disney Dollars.

They were so excited and we still have almost 3 months before we leave. We're going to keep on saving our change. It was really nice to see the looks on their faces when the machine printed out a receipt for $94.00

It is really suprising HOW fast that change adds up!! We have had Dd save her money for WDW from Christmas money and birthday money plus all the change Dh and I have in a change jar. It has always totaled $100.00 by trip time. That is money she can buy anytrhing she wants without any parent argueement about!!

I wish I could do this too, but I need to use change to pay tolls to and from work :( I would love to have $100 in surprise money!

Maggie

You could save dollar bills.

I think we decided that we are going to use this next. If we have an extra dollar laying around we will put it in one of their banks.

We'll see how it goes. :D

We have about $150 in our Disney Fund. I would love to be adding more to it, but I am plastic check card addicted. Mickey

maggie- you should buy one of those prepaid things that you put in your car! When my DH was working in Chicago- he did that and it saved him a lot of time waiting to pay for the tolls. THEN you could save your change!! :p

We're saving change to spend as well. I think we'll be suprised when we finally cash it in.

Enough can't be said about saving change!! Over the years change has paid for 2 family vacations to VA, paid for on-board charges for our cruise last year, even...(and I hate to admit this) paid for the front forks of a brand new motorcyle I backed into.
In 5 months we saved enough for our airfare for DW in Sept. $580 and also a two-day get-away to Atlantic City. We already have more saved for spending and 2 months to go.
Another way to save...don't check pockets when you do laundry. The occassional $'s that get washed add up.

I went to college on pocket change. Every night beginning when I was born my dad emptied his pocket change into a jar. Later, the jar was replaced with a doggie bank we got from the bank. I still remember the fun I had helping roll the coins--not to mention the practice I gained in counting. When we had enough, we went to the bank. At the time, "my" account earned 4.25%. Wish I could find that rate now! Well, anyways, when the time came, I had all the money I needed for a 4-year degree from Michigan State. Not bad! BTW, I still have the doggie bank, and I'm doing the same thing for my kids. Now if only I could find 4.25%!

Just a note to you fellow change savers. Put that jar in a safe place! We used to save change, extra money from rebates, thrift sale etc. in a gallon jar up on the computer desk on the second floor. I had counted and had 190 in change, one fifty and two twenty burried in there. After a bout of nieces and nephews we noticed the two twentys and the 50 had been replaced with 3 ones!!!!! I was furious and went and deposited the change in the bank. It was down to 120 from from the original 280.!!!!
We now deposit it every week or two!!!!

we don't have much change, either, because of the check card but what i do save goes into the bank along with my 'snack sales' money.

I would heed the advice to hide your jar, the. burglars will pick up anything they see.

Also be careful with the change holder in your car! I've had the change stolen out of it when I leave the car for maintenance, valet parking, etc. Once all my change was stolen except for the pennies! Appaarently some overworked, underpaid valet parking guy had the time to sort through my change and just take the bigger coins. And this was at valet parking at a hospital.TRUST NO ONE!

We're doing that too! We started in June and even with the kids using a bit here and there for the ice cream man we have $90! Hopefully, by Friday it will be an even $100. Plus my dh gets scratchers all the time and everytime he's won a dollar he's saved it so he has $50 in scratchers too! Add to that the chore charts the kids have for making wdw world $ and the fact that my MIL gave them $200 we have souveiners more than covered! LOL

I have a change jar too, but I use my check card alot so I don't add that much but anytime I have change it goes in. Two of my kids work in restaurants as bussers and I'm having them save $15.00 per week from their tips. I'm doing the same. By the time we leave on vacation, we each should have $300.00 for spending money.

dd makes $20 every two weeks for allowance...i give her $10 cash and put the other $10 in her disney fund. She should have a bit to spend by the time we go next year.

We have saved change for years--painless and fun! Now we have upped the ante. At the end of each week, I empty all the singles from our wallets into the "giant crayon," plus I add garage sale earnings, rebates, etc. Can't wait to dump it all out in late October and start counting and rolling!

and broke the piggy open tonight....

All six of us rolled and counted and the grand total is..................................................

$368.30 :bounce:

Ever since my husband and I went to Disney on our honeymoon in 1990, we saved change for our trips. At that time we could afford to get a roll of quarters from the bank every time we cashed our paychecks in addition to our daily change. Now 2 kids later and our 5th trip to Disney coming soon, we still save our change. This trip, we saved $1,187 in 3 years. It's alot of fun and the kids really love it. Anytime we go somewhere, they constantly look on the ground for some Disney change.:Pinkbounc

We started our new "change jar" while we were at WDW this week. We are planning on going back in 2006 so we gotta get saving! LOL

We too are addicted to the ol check card! Which doesnt leave much change in your pocket....
so, seeing that our change for disney was going nowhere fast... we started adding rebate checks to it... along with any "surprise" money we came across...
in a few short months we have stowed up almost 100... not bad for check card users who hardly ever have cash around
have fun!
