They just opened up a Save-A-Lot in my town and I am not too familiar with their prices. I normally do my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart.

I was wondering if anyone prefers Save-A-Lot over Wal-Mart and why?

I had been reading some posts about this Save-A-Lot store. There is one near me, and I had never really gone to it. I decided the other day that I would, just to see what folks were talking about.

They did have some good prices on some things. For instance they had a giant can of Maxwell House coffee on sale for $4, which is about half of what is costs at the grocery store. They were pretty cheap on paper products, and breads. It seemed like the majority of the store is no name or off brand items which is fine. The only thing that seemed poor to me was the meat selection, and quality. They were selling 70/30 ground beef, for a little more than the regular grocery store, and it seemed to me that cream was more expensive too.

Overall, you can find some good deals to supplement your regular shopping. If you have no issues with no-names then they have some real good values. I did have to pay for shopping bags on the way out, and bag my own things which I wasn't aware would happen, but understand the cost cutting measure. I don't think I would make a regular habit of shopping there, but I'll certainly check it out from time to time, just to see if there are any decent deals to be had.

I have been to Save A Lot before, and for me, it was not too impressive. Actually I just plain do not like it. It kind of gives me the creeps and Aldi seems SO much better.

I would much rather shop at Walmart than Save A Lot.

I am not a fan of Walmart, but I would shop there before Sav A lot. I have found long expired items at Save a Lot, filthy stores, nasty produce.....

Walmart=poor produce, poor meat, long lines, dirty stores, and higher prices than the competition(Meijer, Kroger, Target).

SavAlot=poor produce, poor meat, long lines, dirty stores, and higher prices than the competition (Aldi).

I see no difference except loud rap music blares at SavALot.

I agree with all the above. I find I do best by shopping the sales at my other local stores (Winn-Dixie and Rouses).

I do sometimes go to Save-A-Lot to buy the name brand loss leaders and some frozen items. I also find their block cheese is a good price and the quality is comparable to other store brands.

Their produce has been atrocious every time I've seen it. The last time I was there, all the potatoes were rotten.

If you shop there, you really have to know your prices, because not all the items are a good deal.

The Save A Lot in my area is dirty and the staff is just as gross as the store. I don't say that to be mean it's just the truth. Believe me, when people are out and about I don't care what they look like, but when you go to work dressed and groomed like you are homeless it's a little off putting. It's not worth it to save on a few items.

Like any store, I suppose it varies by location. Save-a-Lot is similar to Aldi, in that most of the foods are generics. I like Aldi much better, but Save-a-Lot is much closer to home.

I don't normally buy meat or produce there, except bananas which are usually 3 lbs for $1. The best buys are canned stuff, boxed stuff, and some of the frozen food.

SaveALot is alright. A lot of the things said in this thread are true about my SAL too. I would never buy meat from them. It just looks gross. Produce is alright. I can sometimes get some good deals on bananas and potatoes. My best bet is canned and boxed items. I can usually get whole grain pasta there for around .69/lb everyday price. At my Kroger, it's around $1.29 everyday or $1 on sale. I keep an eye on the ad. It's only sporadic though. Sometimes ithe ad is weekly, sometimes it's monthly. SAL does accept manufacturer's coupons and if you sign up for their smart shopper club they'll email you a $5 off $25 coupon.

I really dis like Save-Alot the only way to save money is to buy there junk products! Aldi has them beat hands down. But Save-Alot is close to my work and I go there about once a week to get lunch items and say I will never return again! The rows a so narrow that you cant get by people and I have had to follow behind some one to get what I need. But a Save-Alot in Kentucky is a great place to people watch!:thumbsup2

I shop at save a lot more than at Wal-mart only because our wal-mart does not have a great food selection plus save a lot is only a block away.

Ours is always clean and the staff is super friendly. I have found their house brands to be just as good if not better than the name brands.

I shop at save a lot regularly. Ours is clean, organized and cheap. I buy the meat. You have to look at it just like anywhere else. I buy the 5 for 19.99. I dont buy the ground beef. I get the ground chuck. You just have to choose the meat that is lower fat. This helps my budget. I also like the canned items. We buy a lot of the soups. I buy the frozen vegs. The fresh produce is a hit or miss. The grapes are .99 this week and they look good. All our cashiers are friendly and dressed appropriately.I don't like their brand of coffee.

Can't stand SAL... my aunt and uncle shop there all the time and every time I eat what they cook I get sick. Husband says it's because their products (not the name brand stuff they carry) has a higher sodium content.
I prefer Aldis, Walmart, Krogers and my local grocery store.

Our local Save-a-lot is scary. Walmart will price match on anything in their ad that's produce, meat, or a name brand they also carry, so I prefer that.

I go to our Sav A Lot occasionally for their 5 for $20 sales. Our SAL isn't really dirty, just old it looks it. I rarely buy produce there unless I plan on making banana bread and then I buy their marked down bananas. I don't like the yogurt (ours has only 1 brand but I can't remember the name, it's an off-brand and way too sweet for me). I sometimes go to find things I can't find elsewhere ( like the time I needed naptha soap because I was convinced I could make my own laundy soap after reading a recipe for it on this board). The staff is friendly and appropriately groomed/dressed and they bag your items for you (no charge for the bags here). It's not my preferred shopping place but I do go occasionally.

I have tried to go to Save a Lot before, and sometimes you can get some really good deals. But as a mom with two little kids to take shopping with me, I don't like having to bring my own bags and then bag my own groceries... I'd rather pay .50 more on something at Wal-Mart.

Are you talking about SaveALot or Aldi's? The 2 SAL's near me provide grocery bags and baggers. But I know that Aldi's makes you bag your own groceries.
