My husband and are going to Savannah for our anniversary and would like tips on hotels. We have looked into the Hamilton Turner and the River Street Inn. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on places to stay and things to do. We probably won't rent a car. Can we walk most places? Thanks

We are starwood members and have stayed twice on points in Savannah. Once at the Westin it right on the waterfront and they have a boat that takes you right across the river to riverfront shops and restauranrs..its beautiful with a great view and location. We also stayed at Sheraton 4 Points in historic district..nice hotel..you can walk to riverfront and it on one of the tour bus routes. We would stay at either of them again. We lo e Savannah and it a walkable historic and riverfront.

We have stayed several times at both the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express on Bay Street. Great location for River Street and walking around the city. I'd recommend either hotel.

Make sure wherever you stay that you visit moon river brewing. I stumbled on this and it was a great time.

It's also one of the most haunted buildings in Savannah (or so we have been told). Good beer and good food!

I love the Hamilton Turner inn. Super nice place! It's so beautiful and most of the attractions are in walking distance.

I drive by the Ballastone Inn on my way to work every day, and I think it looks so beautiful. Want to stay there some day!

Most all of the Inns downtown are very nice.

Walking? You can do that, or, get a pass for one of the trolleys, or take the free CAT shuttles around downtown.

If you can make it down to West Jones St. (near the Jim Williams house) is Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (its a restaurant) WONDERFUL food in a family setting. Can't recommend it enough. The River House on River St also has find food.

You can take the free ferry across the river to the Westin. They have food there also. If you golf, there is a golf course on the island with the hotel.

Must sees...hmmmm. The Owen Thomas house, Ships of the Sea Museum, Green Meldrim house and many many others. Go to one of the tourist stations. One is under City Hall on River St., right at the Hyatt. The other is next to City Market. They have flyers and things you can get and you might find coupons and discounts there too.

Other questions, just send me a PM. I'll do what I can to help, or, dig it up for you.

I have been to Savannah several times the past couple of years as my son is studying at SCAD. We usually are trying to save money and last year discovered vrbo.com. We have rented cottages and condos for less than hotels in the historic district. It is more research but worth it. Pay attention to taxes, parking and cleaning fees. I love having a kitchen that functions instead of a microfridge. Much like DVC! Btw, my dad did not want to go that route and he loved the location and price of Planters Inn.

You can walk most everywhere and students drive pedicabs that are inexpensive. Be aware that it can be "hard walking" with bricks, uneven sidewalks etc.

Sign up now for Savannah groupon. It may not pay off, but we have bought some worthwhile deals.

I don't care for the River Street area as much as the Squares, Broughton Street, Cemetary, etc. On my first visit years ago I thought I did not like Savannah as we only saw the Bay St/River area. There is so much more to Savannah!

Happy Anniversary! Enjoy Savannah!

You can walk, taxi or trolley in and around the historic district. Bluegreen has a resort near the historic district and there is a timeshare on Tybee Is (RCI). Neither of these are currently on the DVC list though. There are many hotels and Inns. The Hampton Inn seems to an esp good choice.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas for Savannah. My husband and I are still in the planning stages for this as it is for our anniversary next year. You've given us some great suggestions. Looking forward to that trip a lot. Our anniversary is Sept. 1st so we have a lot of time to plan.

This anniversary is coming up soon and I am getting so excited! We are staying at BLT and are dining at the Chef's Table at Victoria and Albert's. I've wanted to do this for so long. Counting the days!

We have been to Savannah 6 times for St. Patrick's Day, I am in a bagpipe band that marches in the parade. The better hotels to stay in that are close to walking around to see the sites are on Bay St. We have stay at The Inn at Ellis Square once, the Doubletree next door 3 times and the Desoto Hilton on Liberty St. All good hotels. The ones are bay are better for walking and seeing alot of things near the river and city market. Enjoy

Congratulations on your anniversary! This one coming up sounds GREAT, too!

We enjoyed the Paula Deen trolley tour. We enjoyed it so much that this year, we went back to Uncle Bubbas restaurant when we were going to HHI this July. I enjoy historic places, National Parks, so going to Fort Pulaski was a must this time. It was too hot in July to do much walking there, but walking is hard for me anyway.

I'm a former Girl Scout, and especially enjoyed visiting Juliet Lowe's house in Savannah.

Savannah is such a lovely city. You'll have a wonderful time, I'm sure.
