My family and I (DW, DS9 and DD6) have stopped in Savannah several times enroute to WDW the last several years. Most recently, June '06, we stayed at the Country Inn & Suites on the way down. The first room we were given was a disappointment. It appeared when we entered that housekeeping hadn't finished yet. We returned to the front desk and got another room. No problem. This room was clean and very comfortable.
On the way home we spent several hours in St. Augustine first and found ourselves in Savannah early in the evening. We stayed at the Wingate Inn. The room was posted non-smoking but still had a slight smoke odor to it. Nonetheless, it was otherwise clean.
Prices at both were comparable. IMHO, the continental breakfast was slightly better at the Wingate.
Plenty of restaurants all within 2-5 minutes of the area.
Have never made it to to downtown Savannah but hope to one of these years !
The ride to WDW is relatively short the next day.
