Moved to Georgia last summer. We were hoping to go to Savannah last year but with the move and all it entails, we just couldn't go. Hoping to go this October (so plenty of time to plan). For anyone who has been there.....would you stay by the riverfront or historic section? Also, would you recommend a hotel that has a shuttle/trolley that takes you from hotel to sites? I think they have that? Any advice, tips, suggestions, and must-do's would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Georgia and Savannah is one of my favorite cities here. You can't go wrong staying in either place, the river or the historic district. As far as the trolley, there is one that runs out of the welcome center that you can hop on and off of, I'm not aware of any of the B&Bs or hotels that run one of them of their own, although they might have a van. The trolley at the welcome center has an all day ticket and you can hop on and off anywhere it stops. The historic district isn't really all that big and easily walked, as well as the the river district. I suggest you hit the welcome center and talk to the ladies there, have them suggest some of the houses to visit that are open and they have maps for walking tours. If you plan on staying on the river - we love the River Street Inn http://www.reservations.com/hotel/r...B2F1B1ociqEsAI6gsMH2H9PUP9VoRM7AxNhoCEbbw_wcB. It's right on the river in an old warehouse.
In the historic district you can't go wrong with the Hilton Desoto http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/ge...?WT.mc_id=zLADA0WW1HF2OLX3DA4HWB5TABL6SAVDHHF. it's a little older but pretty centrally located. If you want a B&B, the historic district is loaded with them, we love Planters Inn http://www.plantersinnsavannah.com/...w_wcB&ef_id=WCzXXAAAAP9AWL5m:20170213204755:s

Don't forget to go to the cemetary while you are there, it is beautiful.

I've always stayed on River Street-- it's where all the action is! We usually take the trolley to the historic district from there.

I have stayed at both the Hyatt Regency (right on the river) and at Hampton Inn (right across the street) and both are great.

I love Savannah!

Check out Groupon too for deals. We did a Segway tour that was great...took us to all the city squares.

I live an hour from Savannah and go there often. Like once a week or sometimes more often. Anyway, the River Street area is a great area and close to a lot of the major things to do. You could find hotels on River Street or just off of there on Bay Street. There are plenty of shops close by and lots of restaurants. There's also many different tours. Drinking tours, historic tours, ghost tours (lots in October!). You'll find a lot of shops on Broughton St and smaller shops and dining/night life also at City Market. You can catch a CAT (city transit bus) to many places. It's a drive, but you might also want to see Tybee Island or Fort Pulaski or for some wildlife, maybe Oatland Island. Enjoy!!!
