During my cruise, I had my sign on the door on my the entire cruise, but the stateroom attendant seemed upset he couldn't clean me room. It was a little odd. Does anyone else not have there room cleaned if you didn't want it clean? I think they did come in to inspect it as I did get a few messages about it. They did remove my trash once but did tell them they didn't have to along with replacing my towels.

I have zero issues with them servicing my stateroom.

Refusing to allow it to be serviced means so much more work for your stateroom host on turnover day as dust, etc. has had time to build up.

I sincerely hope you didn't remove the tip just because you refused to let them service your stateroom.

That's how they keep all the "nasty's", Norvo etc from spreading. They wipe down all the surfaces, so it's all for the good of everybody on board. Also it's a Safety and Security check, just like the Parks.

They had to clean up after you left - that tip should have remained.

• They removed the trash during your cruise
• They replaced the towels during your cruise
• They would have vacuumed and cleaned the room during your cruise
• Cleaned the room when you left and made it ready for the next person to use it

You were wrong to remove the tip and you were wrong to expect them not to enter the room.

As others pointed out, it's possible you used the services without even knowing - like how do the bags make it to your room during the first afternoon? Did they clean the room before you got there? Did they have to clean up after you left?

When you do use the service they work hard and always aim to please. We love always coming back to the room to find it impeccably clean + the bed made and fresh dry towels. And this kind of stuff after dinner is always fun!

We now learned to bring extra $20s (or $50s on longer trips) to tip extra in the envelopes we get on the last night. I'm not always known as a big tipper in our family, but these guys really earn it!

In addition to what's already been said (which I agree with all of it!) the stateroom attendants also distribute the tip envelopes and the luggage tags for disembarkation morning. They really do so much more than just cleaning your room, they are an integral part of the cruise 'team' if you will.

I'm the kind of person who always leaves the 'do not disturb' sign up on my hotel room door-I really don't need people cleaning up after me (and I don't like people touching my stuff, though yes I know that's a 'me' thing). If I'm in a hotel for a really long time I'll probably take the sign off one day so they can come in and do an 'intermediary clean' so it's not so bad when I leave (though I'm not a slob by any means, lol).

On a cruise, I definitely let them do their thing twice a day (on DCL) and only leave the sign up when I'm actually in the room and don't want to be disturbed. I know it's different than a hotel and I'm fine with it. In fact, last month my friend and I forgot to take the sign down a couple of times when we went to dinner so we didn't get the turndown service and missed the towel animals. I was so bummed!

Wow, I’m not a cruiser but I’m shocked anyone would not tip! You entered a clean room and whether you opt to have them not enter your room during the trip, they still have to clean the room after you depart. It’s a tip position and they deserve their tip since it’s not their fault you chose not to use their service.

As for before I arrived and after I left they are supposed to do that, so to me those days don't count. If I did tip it would have just been a few dollars anyway as that is my usual amount. I also did my own luggage.

In addition to having used the services more than you think, the other issue is that you took a room that would have provided them a tip if someone else had occupied it. It's like going into a full restaurant and occupying a server's table, but saying you won't eat, so no tip was needed.

They are literally making their living based on the number of occupied rooms. On a full cruise, you are costing them money by being there and not tipping, whether or not you use the service. Please reconsider cruising if you don't want to pay customary tips. It should be considered part of the cost. The workers make so little to begin with, the least we can do is pay the minimum suggested tip.

But maybe you are trolling us, since you mentioned you normally only tip a few dollars anyway?

Oh, but people will go down to Guest Services to have them removed. Many will claim they "want to tip in cash" but a fair number of them (at least from reading boards of other lines on Cruise Critic) don't leave anything.

I've only been on one cruise and prepaid our gratuities but the service was so good we left everyone cash in their envelope also. Those people work very hard to make your vacation as perfect as possible.

DW and I are pretty tidy and not too dusty . We let our attendant know that some mornings we will not need services performed and on the last night we do not need turndown. Our room charges are top tier due to being a suite and we also tip in cash accordingly.

OP how did you go from this below comment from last fall to your current thread, previously you tipped but this cruise you didn't? Why change your stance when your behavior was the same?

I did have the do not disturb sign up the entire cruise but still did tip. I didn't like them in my room or want service. Mainly as I don't need the extras and can make my bed if I want to. They also do all the little extra things like rolling up cords or moving things around as I have seen them do in other vlogs. To me it's a little much as I would have to redo it the way I wanted things set up. However they did check in, but don't know if they came into the room to at least do a security check. Did see the room steward in the morings in the hallway though.

I do feel by having them does increase the chance of germs and getting sick.

As far as the room attendant getting upset that's because you didn't let them do it at least once on your trip and they likely anticipated so much more work for themselves once your cruise was over. Depending on the length of the cruise so long as you're not actively sick it's really a good idea to at least let them come in a few times to clean and spruce it up as well as restock. I'm one who doesn't want daily housekeeping in a hotel most of the time but on a cruise I get it every day, if you skip a day no worries but to shut them out of your room for the entirety of the cruise simply because you feel you don't need it is really not the most considerate.

Wow. That makes me want to double my tips next time. Nothing like spending 6 grand on a vacation and then begrudging somebody 15 bucks for their hard work.
