What do you know about Sirrius? I'm thinking of buying one but I heard a rumor that they may be in financial trouble.

Correct me if I am wrong Disers, but I heard Sirius bought XM radio (or vice vesa) so no problems with going belly up.

I have XM and I prefer it - I don't need Howard Stern, but DH would have preferred the NHL channels over NFL so he likes Sirius.

They've only merged down in the States - in Canada they still operate as companies. I have Sirius and love, love, love it. I live in the country and commute into town so it is great to have since I don't have to listen to ads and I get constant music no matter where I go. I don't have to search for a station everytime I drive out of range of that particular station. No matter which one you decide you'll be fine - don't worry about the financial situation - they'll still be operating.

They've not merged here? My vehicle came with XM radio and it now says Sirius XM on the display? All the dialogue says 'Sirius XM' as well??

They are in financial trouble. I just renewed for a year..my friend did 3 years. I am not sure that was wise?:confused3

It may say Sirius XM in the display because the signal/broadcast is coming from the U.S. but they are not merged here in Canada. That would require CRTC approval - something that hasn't been granted nor has it been asked for.

They were in financial trouble but have been "saved" by a purchase of a portion of the Sirius XM company in the U.S. You'll be fine - I just renewed mine too and I'm not worried. If you want more info. try here:

In the States you can get packages where you can get channels from both XM and Sirius but not here. Both have pretty much the same type of channels but some are specific (ie Oprah, Martha Stewart, Howard Stern) to either XM or Sirius so you might want to check out if there is something specific you want before choosing. I have had Sirius for 2 years now and I love having it in my car plus I can bring the receiver from the car into the house.

I have had Sirius for the last 5 yrs and would be lost without it. They have merged in the States but not here. We have XM built into the G5 but never signed up after the free trial because I had my favourites on Sirius plus paying for a full service instead of an add on sub was a factor. When they merge here I'll hook up the car. As for being in trouble I've heard different things so I just re-up every year.

They have merged. Sirius bought XM, and they are now known as Sirius XM.

The lack of the merger in Canada is not due to the CRTC, but it is the fact that there are 2 business empires essentially just redistributing the signal here in Canada, as Sirius Canada, and XM Canada.

They have not come to an agreement to share the stations.

Since they are just re-distributing the signal you will get it as Sirius XM here in Canada, but XM won't get Howard Stern, and Sirius won't get Oprah (Thank God!).

I am a HUUUUGEEE Howard fan, and he has assured his audience that Satellite Radio is here to stay. Yes they have filed for bankruptcy, but it is just a means to pay of some of the dept. They have billion dollar group baking them (I think they bought up 40% of the company), and they are paying of some of the debt. Launching Satellites into orbit runs 1/2 billion dollars each, and they need minimum 3 to triangulate the signal.

The filing for bankruptcy was 2 weeks ago, and they are still on with fresh new live programming daily. They are through tough times, but they will weather the storm.

Buy it with a clear head. Choose Sirius. Or if you have the means, get a US subscription, and get either Sirius or XM, with the BEST OF package to give you both sides of the fence.

I have been a subscriber for 3 1/2 years, and can not imagine driving without it. 100% commercial free music, uncensored big name A-list entertaiment, and of course Disney Radio. What else can you ask for.

:thumbsup2 Get Sirius...you won't regret it.

Commercial free music, Howard, NFL channel and all games, Elvis channel, Springsteen channel, tons to choose from...I only sneak over to 680 occasionally for traffic and weather. Regular radio in Toronto is unbearable with cheesy personalities and endless commercials.

DH has Sirius radio and loves it!! DD loves it also because of Radio Disney!!!

Sounds like me :) 680 for 10 mins to get weather and traffic and that's it.

Don't forget Blue Collar Radio, that's a good channel.

I have had XM since November. I chose it because it has NHL and MLB. The sports package moved me to XM over Sirius.
