Need advice.

The sat nav products you can buy from PC world or Halfords.

Do you need to pay a subscription for these to work, or is it per route your plan?

I have seen one on web, at a good price.

The simple answer is that if its TomTom, you dont pay a subscription. The only extras you will pay for (assuming you prefer to remain legal) are the additional maps, such as the Florida map. TomTom 5 does however have an optional subscription element in it if you are running it on a PDA that has a a phone built in. My XDA IIi can get live traffic updates online using a paid for GPRS service, but I dont use it, so pay no extra.

Im not sure of any "subscription" based kits, but the only ones i know of where you have to regularly pay out on are the ones that are supplied by the some car manufacturers. I know a lad who has a lexus with sat-nav in it, and he pays for periodical updates which come on CD (although he doesnt have to I suppose).

You will also need to consider if you want a PDA running your sat nav, or one of the dedicated units. The dedicated units are nicer looking, easier and more portable I suppose, but you cant use them as a movie player, mp3 player, email etc as well, that you could on a PDA.

I was looking at garmin products that you can buy from the shops, i think it has a suction pad to stick to the window.

:rotfl2: I am not very good at map reading, and DH will be driving, during the night , so it will be dark, and i will be tired. LOL :rotfl2:

I have a factory fitted "command" system which I find a little confusing and difficult to use. DH has tomtom go fitted in his car and I find it so much easier to control. It is extremely well laid out and very clear. I would definitely recommend it. It is so useful - I am always surprised how often I need it!

I have no experience of Garmin products unfortunatly....ive only ever used TomTom3, TomTom USA 2.54, and now TomTom5. I have seen Navigom, or some other thing that did the same on a pda from Aldi, but TomTom does seem to set the standard.
