Has anyone taken their own Sat Nav to Florida ? How did it work ? How did you get the maps.

Thanks,
M

I've not taken my Sat Nav but when I looked into it I just needed to download the US maps for my software in order to get it to work. This wasn't cheap though :(

Getting lost is part of the fun :)

I've never tried SatNav over there, I've just grabbed a free map from one of the restaurants / hotels and used the compass in the car to tell me which way I'm headed. The Voyagers we've had on the last two trips had this built into the roof of the car so we could tell which direction we were travelling in.

You can get the orlando area map for 9.99 Euro's of the Tom Tom website. Works the same as the UK one!

We looked on the Tom Tom website but could not find the USA maps for the 700. Do you have a link.

We do not need a map for the Orlando area but was thinking of driving to Vero Beach or Hilton Head.

Thanks

We hired a satnav unit from USrentacar for our trip in Dec...We didn't use it enough though, the unit (a tomtom 300) was a bit bulky for our liking.
The maps worked fine.

This time we are taking our little garmin i3 which is alot smaller, hopefully will get to use this one a bit more.

I use Navigon's Mobile Navigator 5.0 on a PDA in Europe and in the US and it works great. You only have to wait for up to 15 minutes the first time you switch it on in the USA until it has adapted to being in another hemisphere - The same may happen when you use it for the first time back in UK. I have the whole USA on a 1GB SD-card.

I think they are under plus services on the main header line. I know you could buy USA maps on a card for my Tom Tom One plus they have city maps now and Orlando is listed. I don't know how extensive the map is though. Customer services are really good on the Tom Tom site if you want to ask them a question.

I am planning to take my Tom 700 with us, I assumed I would have to download a map for the whole of Florida, thats great that I can just get one for Orlando.

vero and HH are easy to get to mainly straight roads and well signposted you can get directions from frount desk.I remember going to HH and seeing a sign "roadworks for the next 150 milles"..You can get to vero along the 192 you take it till it hits the sea then turn left on a1a i think

I would check with Tom Tom as to exactly what the map covers because further on in the list is Orlando Airport on another map. If I decide to buy it I am going to check it does cover the main tourist areas and not just downtown Orlando.

The Orlando map covers three airports, Orlando Executive, Orlando International and Trepel. Orlando Executive airport is pretty much in the center of the map, and the map covers approximately 30x35 miles.

The Disney parks are in the bottom left corner of the map.

Edited to add: The Orlando map cost me £3.44 (4.95 Euros) in case someone was wondering.

Hope that helps, :)
