We'll be traveling to WDW pretty soon and are trying to decide between staying in two Fort Wilderness Cabins v. a two-bedroom villa at Saratoga Springs. We've stayed at Fort Wilderness before so we know we love it there, but we'd like to try a new resort and we'd love to be able to walk to Disney Springs. We'd also like to stay close together and Disney will try, but can't guarantee, that we'd get our cabins close together. The real issue is that we have two very young kids who get woken up easily and who also make a lot of noise themselves. I want to stay somewhere where it's unlikely to hear neighbor/outside noise so that I don't have to worry about them being disturbed and I don't have to worry about them disturbing others. Do you think we can get that at SS (I'd request a top floor unit), or do you think we should stick with the cabins? Thanks!

Given your description I feel strongly that the best place for your group is the FW Cabins.
At SSR you will 1) Be sharing wall(s) with your neighbors and 2) be over or under other visitors.
If you feel your young ones are easily awakened, there will be some noise at SSR. And if they are boisterous they will possibly disturb others (especially overhead of other rooms).

the cabins at fort wilderness sounds really good, they are on my list of must visits at WDW, are they classed as a moderate as well ? although maybe not moderate priced

I'll be contrary and say the SSR 2BR, in part because you can put them in their own bedroom and the floorpan of the space is much more conducive to the rest of you continuing to operate while the kids are asleep.

Interesting thought. But I don't think that really matters at all.
When we were in the Cabin, we put the little ones to sleep in the bedroom, shut the door, and the adults relaxed/enjoyed the rest of the Cabin. I think it works just as well as the 2 BR Villas for this. The Cabin is much less expensive that a 2 BR SSR Villa. Plus you have lots and lots of outdoor space, including the deck, for the little ones.

Thanks, everyone! This is helpful. I was hoping to hear something like "SS is especially well soundproofed" :) But it sounds like we'll probably stick with the cabins until they get a bit older.

I'd like to add, for the kids, get a free white noise app on a smart phone, plug it in near their nightstand, and let it run!

My DD and I can't sleep without it in a hotel of any type! It drowns out any noise.

I'd go for a 2 BR unit at SSR. If you want to be close, that would ensure it. Plus, you get your own washer/dryer!

I've had noise issues from others (not too long ago) at deluxe resorts. And most times, at DVC villas I never heard a peep from anyone!

We last stayed at a 2 bedroom suite at SSR, and we heard nobody while we were there. No one over or under or next door. It was very quiet. We were out in carousel, so not a choice location (the walk to Disney springs wasn't horrible and we did it a couple of times).

We stayed at Congress Park at SSR in 2014. We didn't really have any noise as far as connected rooms, but more the noise from across the way at Disney Springs. We were literally one of the closest rooms to the walking path to get to DS. Now when I say there was noise, it wasn't like jackhammers outside a construction site noisy (although that kind of work was going on at that time) it was just minor noise. It didn't bother us, so it wasn't a huge deal.

I think youd be fine to try SSR!! We stayed there in January and LOVED IT!!! We have stayed at a few resorts, with Pop being our "go to" and I couldnt believe the difference! Of course I expected a deluxe to not be a chaiotic as a value, but we never heard anyone, and hardly even SAW other people. And I know it wasnt b/c the resort wasnt booked. We only needed a studio, but had to take a 2 bedroom b/c that was all that was available. And dont even get me started on the 2 bedroom!! Holy cow, so much space!!! It was wonderful!!!!

I found the whole resort at SSR very very quiet, we were often even the only people at a bus stop!

We stayed close to the Congress Park pool and being able to walk to Disney Springs was great.

Can anyone speak to the noise level at Fort Wilderness? I was curious about this myself, since I was thinking of doing a cabin next time, but quiet is a big issue for us as is secondhand smoke, and I gather that one is allowed to smoke on the grounds at FW. Yes? I saw somewhere that they allow smoking on the porches outside the cabins and I pictured us in a cabin next to a cabin of smokers. Not a good picture for me!

TIA!

ETA: OP--We stayed at SSR (in Paddock--not a bad walk to DS at all) on our last trip and our room was completely quiet. This was a studio, so not the same as a 2-bedroom, but our room had a connecting door to the 1-bedroom next door and we never heard a thing.

I don't know about soundproofing from neighbors (a noisy neighbor can occur anywhere), but the Carousel section is dead quiet outside.

We stayed in a cabin last January and heard absolutely nothing. The cabins are pretty spread out so I'm not sure how there'd ever be a noise issue there. I guess maybe if someone is blasting music from their porch or if kids are running around yelling close to your cabin you might have an issue, but we barely saw anyone while we were there. As far as smoking I don't know if it's allowed but I would be surprised if the smoke could drift all the way over to another cabin.

WDW&DLFAN: Thank you so much. I guess I didn't realize the cabins weren't right next to each other. I've walked around the campgrounds many times--usually to look at Xmas decorations--but I didn't have a big awareness of the cabins' locations.

just stayed @ SSR. Less noise than OKW (buses, golf lawn mowing), but we did hear bus noise (we were not near a bus stop), some overhead noise, and muffled noise from those down the hall getting an early start for the day. Also, if you get SSR near the golf course, you will hear early AM law mowing. For your needs, I'd stick with FtW, esp. if it is a lot cheaper. We have NEVER had any noise issues at DVC AKV in the AK Lodge-Jambo house section (5+ trips).

Thank you, this is helpful! The Cabins were so quiet - just like being in the wilderness, go figure ;). For our group we'd have to get two cabins so the two options may end up costing the same. Depending on what discounts are when they come out (we're going in January) SSR may end up be cheaper, especially after factoring in the cost of a golf cart at FW. That's what's making my decision tough - if we could try out SSR and it's the cheaper option, I'd love to do that! But my one year old is a finicky sleeper and not used to traveling so I don't want noise to be an added issue.
