How does one transfer data from one of these to a computer? We have a digicam that has one of these but I don't know how to transfer it to the computer. Do I have to drop $$ on a memory card reader?

I think I can also connect the camera to the computer, but it didn't come with that cable. Is that the only way?

:)

All I know is with our Digital camera, we had to buy the cable seperately, that's how I do it.

<font color=navy>I have a SanDisk Reader and I love using it - it is so easy. They run about $30 (if I remember correctly), but they're well worth the $$.

It connects to the computer via a USB port. Once it's connected, you slip your disk into the reader, which will have its own drive, probably E, and copying pictures onto your computer is as easy as dragging & dropping from one window to the next. It's faster than copying from your camera, and it saves from using the camera motor while you're doing it.

To make it easier for myself, I opened the E Drive when I had the disk inserted in the SanDisk Reader, and made a shortcut of that folder on my desktop. That way, when I want to download pics to my computer, I double-click on that folder & drag & drop.

If you're used to using Windows Explorer, or the folders view in Windows XP, it's easier. And if you have ACDSee (user friendly photo editor), it's made even simpler.

When you do get a SanDisk, though, make sure you get the version that is compatible with your disk - ie, compact flash vs smart media, etc.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks Mary Jo(s)! :teeth:

Another question - I'm looking up Compact Flash readers online, and does the brand really matter? The one from SanDisk is $30, but there's one from PNY that's only $20. Should I just buy the cheapest, or should I go for brand name? Thanks. :)

Does you Digicam have a USB port on it? It is probably hidden by some molding that you can open up. You can also refer to the owner's manual.

It probably does and you could just buy a USB cable and connect your camera to the computer.

Or you can go with the reader......

But you may have to buy a USB cable to connect the reader to the computer.....

I love mine to death. I have a sandisk and a kodak dual card type ne. The pny is also a good name brand.

I too, use a SanDisk reader, and use just like MJ. It is extremely easy and lets me get the camera out of the way. Just take out the card, pop it in the reader, and go. As for brand, I do think PNY is a 'name brand' also. No moving parts to worry about, and I presume there is a one year warranty, as with most items like that. Good luck, enjoy.

Hes, I bought the PNY reader the day after I returned from WDW and I don't have any trouble with mine at all. I can't recall the warranty off the top of my head, but like you I didn't want to spend the extra $10. I like using this much more than going through the camera anyway... not sure why I waited 1 1/2 years to get one.
