My family and I are booked on the repo cruise from LA to Vancouver next year. The itinerary shows that we will be spending the night in San Francisco. I have never been on a cruise that has stayed overnight in port. Does anyone know if there will be a curfew the night we will be docked? Or can you stay off the ship all night if you want? Thanks in advance for your reply!:goodvibes

can't speak to a curfew. But, in my opinion, San Francisco is so expensive I would want to sleep in the room I had already paid for.

In Barcelona you could come go as you want, overnight, and in Acapulco when we stayed to early morning, you could come and go, I expect the same for St Petersburg and therefore San Fran.

One of the reason a ship overnights in a port is for just that reason, to allow people to get on and off the ship all night long.
No doubt San Franciso is an expensive city, but the ship docks right next to Fisherman's Wharf and there are a ton of things you can do for free in that area. Eat on the ship, but explore the city.
Trust me, there is no better city on the planet to people watch than San Francisco.

Hoceymom, you might want to check in on the meets board, there is a thread for that cruise.

One thing I am looking forward to is the Alcatraz night time tour. I don't think we will ne off the ship all night, but some in the group with whom I am sailing have never been to SFO before, so we shall see. I have been a couple of times, but never to Alcatraz, so that will be a highllight, I am sure.

I agree, but I find it weird that in our docs for the eastern TA that we just got, under Barcelona it has an onboard time of 11:00pm.

If they advertise 11pm then you have to abide by that, If the website advertises overnight and no restrictions, it is misleading if there are restrictions. In Acapulco it was IIRC, 3am on a Panama cruise (2005) and you could come/go until then.

I'm planning a trip out to San Francisco this summer.

If you plan on doing Alcatraz, then purchase your tickets a head of time. These sell out fast. Tickets go on sale 3 months prior to date you plan on the trip. I believe the tour is 2.5 hrs., and maybe longer for the night cruise.

Take a hike or bike over the Golden Gate Bridge. Do a hike in Muir woods. See Salsalito (sp?). You can go over one way and come back on the ferry.

Get a 1 day MUNI pass and you'll be able to use the cable cars, buses and trolley all day long. It's cheaper this way. I think one cable ride is $5.00 a person.

I loved the Alcatraz night tour! Have a great trip!

Thanks for the advice on the MUNI pass. My boys want to take the cable cars and it is $5 a person. I have also heard the same advice about Alcatraz. My sister was there a few years ago and did not buy tickets prior to going. It was sold out when they got there.

You can't come and go in St. Petersburg unless you have your own visa OR you're with a tour.

Another thing in San Francisco is the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio. For those with young kids, the Exploratorium comes highly recommended (but I have not had chance to visit yet) and the Academy of Sciences (or as we call it, the Teletubby building!) are some great places.

When is the Wonder scheduled to be in the city. We may have to pop up and just stare at her!

The food in San Francisco is way better than the food on the ship. There are some great restaurants in the city. If you like Italian, some of the best I've ever eaten is located in North Beach. In addition, Boudin bakery has fantastic sourdough and the original Ghirardelli chocolate factory is there. Ferry building also has some excellent choices including Cowgirl Creamery for a great selection and variety of cheeses. Going to San Francisco and not eating is just wrong, IMO. :goodvibes

Hiking across the bridge, through Muir Woods, and into Sausalito all in one day is a bit much. I wouldn't take on that much if you still want to see some of the city itself.

My point is, you can enjoy San Francisco without spending a dime.
I've been known to buy a crab cocktail on Fisherman's Wharf or have dinner at Aliotos. Boudin's is good, but I have one 6 miles from me. But I'm only 70 miles away...and I avoid San Francisco if I can just because of the traffic.

My DH and I are also on this cruise and can't wait. i am a 3rd generation native san franciscan but now live on the east coast. I am still a seaon ticket holder of the Giants and since the ship will dock during baseball season I hope the men in black and orange willbe in town. SF is a great city!

If you have DVC, you could always spend the night at the Fairmont on Union. ;)

I thought the cruise ship docks were a bit further away than 'right next to Fisherman's Wharf'. :confused3 Aren't they up closer to the bridge that takes you to Oakland? (I can't remember the name of the bridge.)

We didn't find the food in San Fran to be all that expensive for a large city. We were there last summer for a week and spent less money on food than we normally do on vacation.
Have to agree with you on people watching there, many 'sights' to be seen. :scared1:

Last time I was in SF, Princess and Celebrity were docked, right at Fishermans Wharf. Not to say DCL will dock there, because we all know DCL does things that only they do.

The Disney Museum is the other must do for me.
