San Francisco Hotel Help

Hi there

Just wondered if anyone can give me some advise on the best area to stay in San Francisco. I am looking at Fishermans Wharf at the minute - are there plenty of restaurants in walking distance (I know there are seafood restaurants, but we don't like seafood, so any other types of food!). Is Fishermans Wharf fairly well located for getting around the area?

How much do you want to spend? There are nice, very expensive hotels on Nob hill which is just up the cable car line from Union Sq. Near Union Sq there are about 20 hotels from 2 stars to 5. All within a few blocks of the square.

Personally I've stayed at a few of the Kimpton inns. I liked some better for thier rooms and some for the rest of the hotel. They are nice for couples though, not for families at all.

We always stay around Union Square. Plenty of places to eat and you can always just take the trolley to fisherman's warf. We typically stay at the Donatello (read reviews on tripadvisor) due to it's location, price, and amenities. I can't argue with the Kimpton hotels though. We've stayed at the Argonaut and the Sir Francis Drake and really enjoyed them.

We stayed at The Holiday Inn Fishermans Wharf, we enjoyed our three night stay. It' close to many different types of resturants and bars. We don't enjoy sea food either however we were never short of options on where to eat. There's also a couple of supermarkets and a nice bakery in the area.

We enjoyed the Fishermans Wharf area it's quite an interesting place, Just mind the gulls they are HUGE and there always hungry.

We walked a lot round SF although some of the streets are pretty steep! We made use of the bus service and the trams. We also hired bikes one afternoon.

Mr Toads tour, a must! really enjoyed it. Check out Trip Advisor.

If you've not been to SF before, it's an amazing city, one of my fav's, no matter what district you stay in you'll have a great time.

Oh we were looking at the Holiday Inn originally so that is good to hear! Is it in walking distance of Ghiredellis . . . going there is a major must for us!!!

Yes, Not that far at all 5-10mins slow walk, they also give away free little chocolate samples

Oh we were looking at the Holiday Inn originally so that is good to hear! Is it in walking distance of Ghiredellis . . . going there is a major must for us!!!

Walking around the wharf area is easy, it fairly flat.

The Cable cars make a Y shape, starting near union square and making the fork of the Y into the wharf. I usually take one fork of the Y going and the other to return walking between them. It's also quite easy and enjoyable to walk along the bay into the North Shore area where the shopping area Pier 39is.

I've found the hotels at the wharf cheaper but the dining better near union square.


Also know that if you have a car in SF parking garages or hotel valets could be $25-$35 a day.

I like the Handlery in Union Sq. be prepared to add $25-30 per day for parking.
If you want inexpensive, clean and convenient with great TripAdvisor reviews, I really like the Travel Lodge Golden Gate. It is on Lombard in the Marina Dist. in Cow Hollow. Love it! Basic motel but clean and in a great neighborhood.

We stayed a few weeks ago at parc 55 in union sqaure. It was 179 a night but included valet parking(parking is a pain and expensive) we could walk very easily to the trolley turn around and were in easy walking to a bunch of great restaurants. The hotel had been just renovated and was pretty nice. But for us it was about staying in union and not worrying about parking

The last time we went we stayed at the Hilton in both Fishermans warf area and at Union squre. We don't eat seafood either and found plenty of places to eat. I really enjoyed the Boudin bakery, lots of fun bread shapes and it tastes wonderful, even had to bring some home!

Of course Ghiradelli is not to missed but the restaurant is expensive. I brought home a lot of bags of their chocolate squares. i actually just found the box under the guest room bed. I'm shocked there is any left considering my Mom was just staying in there! Obviously she never found them, she'll be mad when I tell her what was under her nose the whole time

I'll have to ask my Husband what else we did.

Oh wait, we went to Beach Blanket Bingo, was that the title. It was very wacky and far out but loads of fun and those hats!! I wanted to go Teatro Zinzani, if that's right. I need to go look this stuff up!!

Ditto that. I've stayed there a couple of times for Girls X-Mas shopping trip and it's clean and at a great location in Union Square. A couple of blocks down is the start of the cable car which can take you out to the Wharf.

Personally, I find the Fishermans Wharf area too touristy and not reflective of the real San Francisco. I would try somewhere closer to North Beach Italy town or if you want somewhere calmer, try Nob Hill like Hotel Drisco.
