We are a family looking to spend some time in San Diego after visiting Disneyland. I'm trying to find a hotel/resort that is right on the beach. Looking to pay no more than 250.00 a night. Help!!

The Hotel del Coronado is the standard, but probably out of your price range. Some nights the price may be around $280 a night.

OP don't know if with your budget it is possible. Check out Hotels.com or TripAdvisor.com to view properties and prices.
If you get a great deal at The Hotel Del you will still be over $250.

Oh - the Hotel del Coronado is technically not in San Diego proper, but I'm guessing that doesn't matter. However, I wasn't kidding about it being the standard that other beachfront hotels are compared.

We are going this February and staying at the Pacific Terrace which is right on the beach. We are paying $236 for a room with a sale rate. I've seen other sales by watching their site. We've never been there before, but it gets good reviews. We were definitely wanting to stay on the beach too!

We have stayed at the Hyatt across the bay in San Diego. On every trip we have seen one Navy ship either coming or going. Not to mention the Seals doing training in front of the Del on our stays there.

Check out the Loews Coronado. Not exactly on the beach - a short walk through a tunnel which goes under the road and then you are there. Very nice hotel - I think the hotel itself is nicer than the Del, especially if you are in a standard room.

We got Loews for $120 on Hotwire in November, and would definitely stay there again. The only downside is that it's not walking distance to anywhere except the beach, as it is on the south end of the peninsula from Coronado.

Hotel Del Coronado is our go to vacation spot in San Diego. Its so wonderful. It is indeed very high price but you can't beat the location, pool, hot tub, and all the other fun amenities. Spend the money and have the time of your life!

Also each year they usually do a buy 2 get 1 free stay. But beware as they charge for everything (parking, resort fee, etc.).

Just do it!

The city of San Diego, itself, does not have much "beachfront". We mostly have bayfronts with "San Diego Bay" & "Mission Bay" as the two main ones. If you go a bit North of downtown, you will end up in Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach. These are our surfer/college hang out areas. I have lived in San Diego 10 years and do not go this part of town. Further North is La Jolla, and the shores get rocky, so you may be oceanfront, but there may not be any beach. Even further North are Del Mar, Encinitas, Cardiff, Carlsbad and Oceanside. All of these cities are a good 20-45 minutes away from downtown without traffic, but they are all beachfront cities, with sandy shores.

Over on Coronado Island, which is really a peninsula, you have the famous Hotel Del, but there is a wonderful little hotel right across the street called the Glorietta Bay Inn. The beach infront of the Del is public property, so you can simply cross the street and access the beach. Additionally, the Lowes Coronado is South of Coronado, down the Silver Strand...about 5 minutes drive beyond Coronado Village.

If you are military or DoD, you can stay at the Navy Lodge on North Island as well.

EDIT: I guess I should add, you could not pay me to stay at the Hotel Del until they change their policies regarding tourists on the property. Its almost impossible to get a dinner reservation, the lobby is always jam packed with tourists, and good luck getting a seat at the bar. The rooms are in desperate need of repair, the carpet is buckled in many of the hallways...its just sad. I spend a lot of time there, as I have clients that stay there for meetings and I do room checks before they arrive, so I see first hand...it is not worth the money, in my opinion.

I was thinking of staying at the Navy Lodge, how easy is it to get around from there.

Which Navy Lodge? Most of them are fairly easy to get around though

I think I mean the Navy Inn on Coronado - first time we are going there. Last time, I stayed on Ocean Beach, as my DD wanted to be on the beach. But that was just me and my 2 kids. Now, my DH is coming with us, so the family suites seem like a good deal. Plus, it has free parking and a kitchen.
Any good places to eat that are not fancy, but good and not expensive? Thinking about the Go Card, but have to weigh that with the ITT prices for what we think we are going to do.

Thanks for answering.

Coronado is easy to get to almost anything. Plenty of resturants near by, both on and off the base. The Go card is a great deal, even better than some of the it prices. Just the Zoo, Sea world (3 days or more) and Legoland alone will save you $40 bucks, based on the 3 day pass, not including the other attractions you have access to. Also if your DH is active duty he will get into the Zoo for free with his CAC ID.

The 3 day pass can be purchased at the Zoo, or you can buy them on the Go Card website.

Not sure when you're going since this was posted in January, but hands down, stay at the Catamaran! This is a beautiful resort on Mission Bay, and is also right across the street from the beach. The room rates are in your price range, and you can also get room packages that include tickets to Sea World or a 3-park pass (Sea world, Zoo, Safari Park). As an added plus, you can take a complimentary cruise on the Bahia Belle.

Don't know if you've been yet, but Navy Lodge Coronado is an awesome, amazing place. It could be the best deal in San Diego.

The city of San Diego has a heck of a lot of beach front. All of Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and La Jolla are the city of San Diego. La Jolla has the entire Shores area that is all pristine, white beach. If you have lived in SD 10 years and don't know what these areas are like, it might behoove you to get to them a bit more often. It might surprise you how different they are than you perceive them.

Clearly, I listed those beaches. OP is looking for a place to stay that is "right on the beach". Please list off the hotels that meet the OP's criteria of "right on the beach"...Catamaran, Bahia, The Dana, Paradise Point, Hilton, Coronado Marriott, none of those are ON THE BEACH, they are on THE BAY.

There is Tower 23, Hotel Del Coronado, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club...what else is directly on the beach? Yes, we have beach front. I mentioned the same beaches you did. But OP is looking for a hotel that is beachfront. And for the record. I work in the corporate travel and tourism industry in San Diego so I know the city pretty darn well. :)

You said "the city of San Diego doesn't have much beachfront". That is clearly wrong as there is 4 miles of beach front alone in South Mission, Mission and Pacific Beach. That doesn't include Ocean Beach. You said La Jolla might not have any beach when the Shores is always there and stretches well past Scripps Pier. Hotels on the beach include Pacific Terrace, the Diamond Head Inn, The Pacific View Inn, Crystal Pier Hotel, Ocean Park Inn, The Surfer Beach Inn and the Blue Sea Beach Hotel, all in Pacific Beach. La Jolla Shores has the La Jolla Shores Hotel.

So now seriously...... if you didn't know all those hotels.....

I grew up in Tampa Bay area of Florida - any sandy area with water was considered "beach front" whether it was Tampa Bay,Gulf of Mexico, or Atlantic Ocean.

Just confused by the wording of MunFam
