If we drive down there in May, stay a couple days and see Sea World and the Zoo, what else should we see/where should we stay that is nice enough/close enough, but affordable? Thanks! :goodvibes

The museums in Balboa Park, Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp area, the ship museums at the foot of Broadway.

For a place to stay you might try looking at places in Hotel Circle - they have everything from budget hotels like Motel 6 to Holiday Inn Express, Red Lion, Doubletree, and Residence Inn. There's also a Hyatt, Marriott, and I think a Hilton.

They have the USS Midway Museum at the harbor. You can drive over to Coronado Island. We enjoy going up to Cabrillo Point National Monument on Dana Point. The views are incredible and it is a very interesting little place for $5, maybe $7 now, a car.

I'm going to watch this thread--we're going there in July or August.

Has anyone had luck with SD hotels off of Priceline?

:)

we are staying at the comfort inn zoo for 69 through the entertainment rate

Just FYI we are going to SD in July for Comic con and that weekend most hotels in the area are not booking until March 18th, and they will be EXPENSIVE! I don't know how but we managed to find only one hotel in Hotel Circle for 102/night through Hotwire!

The hotels that ComicCon has listed average about 200/night. ComicCon is July 22-25. So it will be Very crowded then from what I am told, we are first timers.

I would also like to know what there is to do around SD, we couldn't get tickets to SDCC on sat so we are open for plans!

Other things to do in SD would be old town (great mexican food there), the museums at balboa park (balboapark.org), wild animal park, mission beach, gaslamp district, seal beach, carlsbad flower fields, birch aquarium, pacific beach, mission san diego del alcala, star of india, uss midway, horton plaza, julian (great apple pies)

Thank you for all the tips about places to see, everyone :)

I picked a really nice hotel in the gaslamp district to stay at because I found a great price compared to the rack rate, $169/night. The US Grant. Looks beautiful.

I had definitely planned to go there, because a couple of months ago we read Two Years before the Mast (written by the Dana whom the point is named after!) - and I had picked the book - it interests me, not to mention looking forward to the views :)

You will love the US Grant. It is very upscale. The lobby alone is gorgeous. It has been about 18 years since I stayed there. Enjoy.

We were just there and I mispoke regarding the location. Carbrillo National Monument is on Point Loma. It has spectacular views of the ocean and cliffs on one side and great views of the harbor on the other. The lighthouse is also very interesting.

Just a little tidbit of information, Cabrillo National Monument is the second most visited National Monument in the country behind the Statue of Liberty.

Thanks :) I like lighthouses, too.

I just booked a 3* hotel on priceline for $60/night. It's for this Sat/Sun night(Mar 26-27) We got the Courtyard by Marriott Old Town. I imagine that in the summer rates are higher but still it seems like a good deal... the rates on their website and other hotel booking sites was around $120.

Sea Port Village is another great place to spend part of the day. They have cute shops, good food and a great view of the bay.
