the kids have done the AK "zoo", the memphis zoo, and the st. louis zoo...in fact, i think the kids probably have had enuf of zoos....but we will be in southern california.....should we spend/waste a day on a zoo that everyone else has since copied?? thanks for your input

It's a wonderful zoo, but there is also Sea World....:D

The San Diego Zoo is huge and beautiful plus it has a skyride, an interesting bus tour, decent food plus some shows. It's definitely a cut way above any other zoo I've seen (including the DC zoo)but then we're zoo fans. Oh another thing, it is pricey.

In my opinion & that of those in our household who have been the answer is no it is not worth it.

We were disappointed with it. The skyrail (chairlift) is a waste..........all is really does it takes you from East to West or vice versa, you can't see a thing from it, only bush.

I'm sure there must be better things to see than that.

I love zoos.
We always go to the SD zoo when we are in the area.

Maybe it's because we've been to a really great Zoo over here & all the write up about San Diego we thougth it was going to something wonderful, but it wasn't as good as the one in Oz that we've been to.:(

We've been to the San Diego Zoo twice and I love it. My favorites are the Panda's but the entire zoo is worth it in my opinion.

Lots and lots of walking so if that is hard on you be warned and maybe buy a combo ticket that includes the Kangaroo bus. That bus lets you hop on and off at different points.

I LOVE zoos, and the San Diego one is no exception!

Definately opt for the bus. There is alot of walking without the narrator the tour provides. It will weigh on your visit.

Personally, I didn't like the SD Zoo. Lots of up hill walking...and lots of gazells (sp?). It started to be the running joke that we'd walk further up the hill only to see....more gazells....more hill walking....more gazells. Really disappointing. But, on the flip side, the Pandas and Polar Bears were very very nice to see.

BUT, I really am not much of a zoo person, so bear that in mind, too. ;)

never been to far away right now but it looks like a great zoo from the show that was on animal planet..

but since your from TN I must recommend the Cincinnati Zoo, it's one of the best zoo's in the US... it has a bird exhibit thats ranked number one.

I also like the knoxville zoo, since I lived there for 5 years, I went once a week, and it never gets old... I'm a river otter freak

We went to the San Diego Zoo last year and I can tell you it is the best zoo that we have ever visited. By all means, do the bus tour first. You will see a lot from the bus and then be able to make a decision on what you want to focus on. It doesn't make sense to wander around seeing animals that you aren't interested in. Our main interests included the polar bear, all of the primates, cats, reptiles and of course the pandas. That took a good part of our day. We bought a combined ticket that included Sea World, Wild Animal Park and the Zoo. We loved them all. After we left the zoo we went to Old Town and had a wonderful out door Mexican lunch. San Diego is a wonderful city and I can't think of a better area to live in...especially after this snowy, cold winter in Ct.

The San Diego zoo is wonderful. We visited once. I was not convinced that it was worth the $32/adult and almost $20/child admission fee. We probably wouldn't pay that much to go again, but it was a great place to visit, very impressive.

san diego zoo- worth it??
YES!
And what we did one year was join the SD Zoo.
That way our membership was tax deductable, and we got to ride the Skyfari for free, unlimited amount of times. Otherwise, you pay to ride, and it is not cheap.
Plus we got all sorts of coupons -- for meals, gifts and park transportation.
We also went twice that year. (Actually I went three times. DH went twice.)
And I think we got free parking at the Wildlife Park. Otherwise that was $6 in itself.
And you can work out your tour so that there is very little, if any, hill climbing. They have busses, trams, escalator....
The hills can be gruelling.
the best view I ever had of the Pandas was going right over them on the Skyfari. :)

I enjoyed it, but my BF called it an Escher Pit when we went with my parents because we always seemed to be walking uphill. We had been to Disneyland the day before so he was kinda sick of walking. My cousin's son fed the giraffes on their trip last spring. He's a big giraffe nut so that was one of the highlights of his trip. They also fed the lorikeets. Word through the family grapevine was that my cousin's husband was a hit with the birds. :p

There's also the Wild Animal Park which I've never been to, but that has you riding in a vehicle through large animal enclosures.

My parents also did the membership since they live only 2 hours away. They go down every couple of months or so.
