I'll be in San Diego for a conference the week of November 10. I need some help in what to wear. I'm thinking my wool suits I'm wearing now in the wild north of Canada will be too hot -- lightweight suits for daytime, jeans and a light jacket for evening? My second question is I'm staying downtown, what is the Horton Plaza Mall like? It seems to be upscale shops. For sure I need to do some shopping. How far of a cab ride is a good mall not as upscale as Horton Plaza.

I think you will enjoy the Carlsbad Factory Stores. This is more north of San Diego than where you will be staying. But if you are renting a car, it is just heading north on the I-5 and use the Legoland exit. The factory outlet stores are close to Legoland. We go to SD every summer and have found many great deals at the Factory Stores. While there, don't forget to grab a quick bite to eat at Rubio's. Their fish tacos are sooo good and inexpensive. Most Canadians can probably spend a whole day at this outlet :-) picking up deals and, trust me, there's so much there that they don't sell here -- even a Crate & Barrel outlet store. The deals are better than the Seattle Premium Outlets. (OK, can you tell I love to shop?!?!)

We also like the Fashion Valley mall. I believe it's in the Mission Valley area, which is closer to downtown. It also has a Cheesecake Factory in this mall. I've found some good deals there. It's not as upscale as Horton Plaza.
