San Angel Inn?

I am no expert on Mexican cuisine. I actually like Taco Bell and the chain restaurants that populate the U.S. The few times I have been at SAI I enjoyed very much. The atmosphere is terrific(albeit dark) and reminds me of the Blue Bayou at DLR(their food is better though). :earsboy:

I think it is expensive for what you get. Also if you are looking for traditional texmex usa style you will not be happy. The cantina outside is awful. Just my opinion but I would "bored" the ride inside if you have little ones and skip the restaurant both inside and out!

We ate there for the first time this past sept. The atmosphere is nice, especially on a hot, hot day. However I didn't care for the food at all. I have eaten authentic mexican food even in mexico and I felt this was closer to South American fare. The soda was nasty. We sent it back twice and then just asked for water instead. The kids menu was good, american choices.

Have fun

I love it... we went there expecting authentic Mexican cuisine and we got it. If you are looking for food more like Taco Bell's, go to the Cantina across the way. If you choose to eat at San Angel, try one of the more exotic entrees. My favorite, as of yet, is the Pollo a las Rajas, which is grilled chicken breast served over red peppers, onions, chile poblano, chorizo and melted cheese... the margaritas are great and the nachos they supply on the tables are yummy too :p

The atmosphere inside the pyramid is gorgeous and it is particularly magical if you can get a table next to the El Rio del Tiempo boat ride/pyramid. Be aware that the Cantina de San Angel is not located inside the Mexican pyramid, but outside next to the lagoon at a counter-service station.

I suggest you give it a try at lunch (the prices are cheaper)... I eat Mexican food often and enjoyed this restaurant both times I visited.

The decor is beautiful but.......the food is awful. My local taco bell is better. I have been 4 times....the last time being June 2004 - I will never go back.

I totally agree!!! (And yes, I do enjoy "authentic" mexican food as well as Americanized) The service is even worse than the food. Don't waste your time or money.

Food awful. Service bad. Atmosphere very nice. We liked the counter service better outside. Would not ever go back to the restaurant again.

We ate here last September and LOVED it. I was surprised because it gets bad reviews here, but I love the atmosphere at this pavilion and wanted to try it anyway. All 4 of us loved what we got (and, yes, they make a great margarita on a hot day!).

We had some very good meals at SAI in the mid-to-late 90s, and decided to try it again last week for lunch.

The "Queso Fundidos for two" appetizer ($9.95) consisted of three sets of small soft taco shells filled with miniscule amounts of meat and cheese.

Our Tacos al Carbon platter was three soft tacos with onions and steak, served with quacamole and salsa ($12.95). Not bad, but totally nondescript: without any distinctive flavor.

On the plus side, our kids loved their cheeseburgers, and the SAI atmopsphere is always relaxing to us.

Was the food bad? No, it was generic. Had the overall quality in our opinion slipped from past visits? Very much so, in our opinion. For the same money ($72.00), we had a phenomenal lunch at Restaurant Marrakesh which didn't have the same "assembly-line" feel to its food preparation that we recently experienced at at SAI.

We thought the atmosphere was nice at San Angel. The margaritas are good but they are outside at the Cantina also. Our service wasn't good but wasn't awful either. We all LOVE all kinds of Mexican food and we were disappointed in it. I had tacos al carbon and they were pretty tasteless and was a small portion even for me and I don't eat much at all at one sitting.

I'd pretty much second this. Decor is very nice, but seating was cramped, service was slow and food quality was "adequate," which was a disappointment (coming from someone who loves Mexican food). Overall, nothing special...there are better places.

Out of 9 days of eating around WDW...this was our least favorite experience. The decor was nice...but we were cramped and our waiter was definitely having a bad night. We love all kinds of food and were disappointed with our food that evening. We will definitely not eat there again. We did not have our normally fun dining experience that we had in every other restaurant in the world.

I love the nachos at the counter service place outside of the Mexico pavilion. That was one thing that I ate during my June trip when my morning sickness was raging and I loved them.
I have read mixed reviews about the restaurant inside the pavilion. I would go for lunch and spend less money. That way if the food isn't that good, you won't be paying dinner prices.
Lissawyn is right. We have eaten inside but thought the food outside was about the same but without the big price tag for the atmosphere. I always have to get nachos there. Darn tasty. :daisy:

We really enjoyed San Angel. The Queso appetizer was amazing as was my flan for desert. We also enjoyed the entre ( I got the Plato Mexicano), and had no problem with the server at all.

All in All I would go there again in a heartbeat!

We ate there during the week before Christmas and the whole family enjoyed it. There are so many different regions of Mexican food--that may be why some people are disappointed. I despise Tex-Mex but adore New Mexican food. This was closer to the New Mexican food that I enjoy--not exactly but way better than any Mexican restaurant that I have tried in Michigan (ick). DH and I both had the combination plate which came with a burrito, enchilada, and a steak. I gave him my steak, he gave me half his burrito and enchilada (mainly because the meals were too large for us.) DD got nachos and liked those (she's not very adventurous but does like her red chile in NM).

I'd say give it a try--go for lunch if you're worried about spending too much for something you might now enjoy. We had great service on a very busy night--my only complaint was the amount of tables they had squished in there--you could barely move your chair.

The atmosphere is great but, yes, the food is not! The service also leaves much to be desired. I think that if you are really looking for good Mexican food and eat it a lot other places, this place will surely dissapoint.

I love SAI! It's not the best food I've had in my life, but it's also not the worst. But you can't beat the decor and the margarita's!After a busy day in the hot FL sun, nothing beats taking a nice break at SAI! If you're worried, just have an snack and a margarita instead of a full meal, or go at lunch when the menu is cheaper.

Stopped going there years ago when they "Americanized" it by serving taco bell tacos vs. the good shredded beef kind and removed chile rellenos from the menu. The atmosphere is nice but you can get the same type of tacos, rice and beans outside for much less.

I personally pass 'em both up!
