So, last week I was in Epcot solo with a 2 yo, and I decided to hop into Epcot and find someplace good to eat. I should mention that the 2 yo was operating without a nap, so this was optimistic thinking on my part. I was hoping for Chefs de France, or Teppan Edo, or Restaurant Marrakesh. (we had noticed earlier in the week that while the economy does not appear to have affected crowds at Disney, the restaurants are definitely less busy and most seem to have room if you walk up, especially slightly off-hours.)
As soon as we walked into the World Showcase, the little one started to lose his mind. So I figured it was time to eat, ASAP. We went into Mexico, and headed for the San Angel Inn. I love the inside of the Mexico pavillion, and ate there years ago with my parents, so I wasn't disappointed really to be stopping here. There were some people waiting for tables, so I asked the hostess how long the wait would be for two people. She said a half hour. Figuring Mr. 2 yo couldn't wait that long, we turned to leave, and he started losing it again. I figured distraction was the best bet, so we headed over to the Three Caballeros ride. My plan was to ride that, and then duck outside and grab whatever food I could get from a counter service place. As we sailed past the San Angel Inn, I could see the place wasn't even half full. Many tables by the ride were empty, and a whole row of tables along the back were empty.
We rode the Three Caballeros ride, and I stopped back at the hostess stand and asked (politely) if there was still a half hour wait for two. The hostess seemed a bit embarrassed, and seated us right away. Which was great. Our waiter came right over, and I explained that my dining partner was very hungry, and could use some chicken fingers and chocolate milk ASAP. I swear the waiter must've stolen some other kid's food, because he was back in a flash with his meal.
I ordered the chicken enchilladas with green salsa, and that was back quickly, too. It was fine; nothing amazing, and not a ton of food. Which was kind of disappointing. I was paying for it myself (not Disney Dining Plan) and was hoping for a substantial entree so I could maybe skip dinner.
But on a hot day, the ambience can't be beat at the San Angel Inn. So quiet, cool, and calm. It really feels like night inside. The service was fast, and maybe I would've enjoyed my meal more if I ordered something more ambitious (there was a pork dish that also seemed appealing -- should've done that one.)
All in all, a fine meal and a nice break. Bill came to about $30 with tip.
