I just closed on OKW with a February use year. I would LOVE to also own at VWL. So, should I have the same use year or does it matter? Thanks for the education on DVC.

I think the only way you could have a different UY is to have a totally seperate contract with a 160 pt buy in.

Add-ons will maintain th UY of the original contract.

We own at SSR & BLT and have the same UY for both. I think it's much easier to keep track with the same UY.

If you bought direct from Disney, any add-ons bought from Disney will have the same use year. If you buy a resale you could wind up with a different use year.
Owning at diferent resorts with the same use years is a pain to deal with and it's even more of a pain with different use years.

Having one UY is the easiest.

Having different UY's take a little more tracking but I don't think it's difficult. We have both Apr and Oct UY's. If you want to combine points at 7 months for a different resort it's easier to have one UY - but again it's not that hard to do it with two.

you probably already know but in case you don't - be aware that your OKW pts cannot be used to book VWL at 11 months out and your VWL pts cannot be used at OKW at 11 months out.

at 11 months, your VWL pts can only be used to book VWL and the same for OKW. both would be your "home resort" but only for the pts owned at that resort.

Thanks for the correction. Totally forgot about resale.

When you have two different UY's, it is like having two different memberships as each will have its own member #.

We owned two for a short time and unless you have enough points in the contract to do what you want (without having to combine with the other UY contract), it can be difficult. For example, we didn't have enough in either contract to book our entire 6 night stay at 11 months without borrowing points from either one or the other contract or without transferring points. I realized it was more than I wanted to deal with and sold only 2 months after buying it.

Sorry, I'm new to all this, but I want to try and understand how this all works!

Say you have 50 OKW points and 50 VWL points with the same UY - would they be considered the same membership still? Or would the points be under different membership numbers? If I wanted to use 75 points to book OKW at 11 months out, would I be able to do that or would I have to transfer some of the VWL points in order to book? Or can you just use whatever points you want out of the whole 100 points if they are the same UY?

Many thanks for any answers :)

First thing is to understand a membership. Usually that is associated with UY. If you have one UY you will have one membership. If you have more than one UY then you will have more than one membership.

Every membership can have multiple contracts. So, in the scenario you are talking about it would be 2 contracts - one for OKW and one for VWL - under one membership since they have the same UY. As was mentioned above points always retain their home status so you could still only use 50 OKW points at 11 months and the VWL could only be used at VWL at 11 months. At 7 months you would be able to use all 100 at any resort and you do not do any transferring.

If you wanted to use 75 points at OKW at 11 months it would have to be thru banking/borrowing of your OKW resort points.

usually the same membership number, but if you buy 2 resales with the same UY and they are titled slightly differently - it could be 2 membership numbers.

VWL pts can never be used to book OKW at 11 months out. the same is true for any other resort (in other words, OKW pts can never be used to book VWL at 11 months out.)

one poster likes to think in terms of currency: if you want to book OKW at 11 months out, OKW will only accept OKW pts to reserve the room - you can use banked OKW pts, current OKW pts, borrowed OKW pts or even OKW pts you transfer in from another OKW owner - but only OKW pts are accepted at the 11 month window.

at 7 months - with the same member number - you can mix and mingle pts as you like. if you need 14 pts to book VWL for one night, you can take 4 OKW pts and 10 VWL pts to book it if it's available.

at 7 months - with different member numbers - it gets more complicated.

but at 11 months, only BLT pts can reserve BLT and only OKW pts can reserve OKW (and so on). no way around it.

Or can you just use whatever points you want out of the whole 100 points if they are the same UY?

UY has no impact on booking - UY tells you 1) when your banking window closes and 2) the dates that your pts are valid. that is all.

home resort is what tells you when you can call to book and you need pts from that specific home resort contract to book at 11 months out.
