Not sure if this is the first year, but it is definitily the first year I have noticed.

While out running errands I came across an unmanned Salvation Army bucket location.

In the place of the bucket is a QR code that can be used to make a one time donation or setup a recurring donation.

There is also three different tap to donate terminals where you just need to tap your tap enabled credit card or cell phone.

I know it has been a dozen or more years since I threw change from my pocket into the bucket at Christmas time because I don't pay for anything with cash so I never have change or bills to put in the bucket.

I like it. Makes being charitable so easy!

I saw that sign a couple of weeks ago -- with a bell ringer. I think so many people don't carry cash that it became necessary for an electronic payment method.

I’ve seen the tap to donate last Christmas as well. Nothing new!

I just confirmed this with my husband, who leaves for one of his annual bell-ringing shifts in an hour. He has this sign too.

I've only done the school supply drive and I don't remember having a sign like that.

It's not the first year. It's been around for a while now.

Square payments have been around for like nearly 15 years at this point (close to that). That was their first stint in non-physical cash donation options.

Kettle Pay which is what the OP is showing has been around for 6 years now. Options like Venmo are probably more recent additions as the service has been more broadly embraced. https://crestmont.edu/usn/news/the-salvation-army-introduces-kettle-pay#:~:text=Nov 14, 2019,sent directly to their phone.

Not to mention it's safer. There have been reports over the years of people stealing the buckets and assaulting the bell ringers.
