Can anyone tell me if they offered a salmon/steak bbq during the cruise? I seem to remember this from our last cruise and my family tells me I am wrong. Can anyone help with this? I think it was during the day the we cruised Tracy Arm.

They used to do an outdoor bbq with salmon on Tracey Arm day, but after the last dry dock, they stopped because there's not room to do it outside now. We haven't done an Alaska cruise since before they stopped, but they probably do something similar inside. We cruised to Alaska in 2014 and they did it outside then. I don't know when they stopped doing it outside, I think it's been over a year, but not for sure. There was a thread about it when they stopped though.

We cruised to Alaska last August and no, there is no longer a bbq up top deck. And they don't do anything inside, either. However, they do come around with pea soup in bread bowls and also the hot chocolate cart circles too. I like mine with Baileys :ssst:

They did however serve salmon for dinner one evening in the MDR

Did they offer it with Bailey's or did you go to Cove Cafe for the addition? I like mine with Bailey's or Rumplemintz.

That outdoor BBQ was amazing. So sad they stopped it. Another reason to avoid Disney when sailing Alaska.

No, I was offered it. My dh and I were sitting down looking out at the views on deck 9 and a waiter came round with drink offers, including hot chocolate with Baileys :thumbsup2

Perhaps it is worth clarifying. I love Alaska and wish to sail there again, but it won't be with Disney. I continue to enjoy Disney cruising and just finished a two week Panama Canal on the Wonder. Glorious. I sailed Alaska on the Wonder in 2011. I was not impressed and I've talked to many others on other cruise lines and learned what I was missing. They have worked to resolve many of the issues, but have created new ones. One of the things we enjoyed and thought was unique to Disney in Alaska was the BB

... sorry ... didn't finish before I hit the wrong key and posted ...

Cruised with the Mouse last June to Alaska with two kids and their kids (11 of us). We had a blast, with or without salmon. It was offered for dinner, not on the top deck during glacier day. We were pixie dusted several times, met a bunch of characters/princesses (and Capt. Hook...a real character), saw seals, whales, shows, experienced rain, sun, cold, hot...typical Alaska. Our G-kids hated to see it end. The big kids did too.

We had vastly different experiences with the BBQ. It was basically some over grilled salmon, over cooked meat and some random side dishes that you could eat outside so they all got cold before you could even finish them. So...pretty much just Cabana's but outside in the cold. I was so supremely underwhelmed.

Our experience was the same on our cruise in June 2014. I was really looking forward to the BBQ, but it was not good at all. Loved the rest of the cruise though.

I sailed on RCCL to Alaska in 1995, and as a shore excursion we had a delicious salmon meal. I believe it was in Haines, Alaska. I imagine you can get something you like at a port.

I want to get to Denali, and from what I am reading, Princess does that best.

Salmon is good, but Alaskan King Crab is better. This is from Tracy's Crab Shack in Juneau.

Very similar to my experience with the cookout (sorry...there was no barbecue served...grilled fish, hamburgers and hot dogs are NOT barbecue) on HAL. Very underwhelming.

And yes, they DO the outdoor cookout on other lines. It is NOT something that was unique to DCL.

Since my experience is now 7 years old, I should probably file it away. It really was good and yes I do know the difference.
Bottom line really is, I would never recommend Disney in Alaska. They have a lot more experience now and are starting to do different cruises with different ports, so perhaps one of those might be good. They've also made significant updates to the ship, but one of the best places for viewing on Tracy Arm day has been converted to a concierge lounge, so that's a bummer.

Love those crabs! They would be the main reason if I visit Juneau again ...with Disney. Seeing Minnie in her parka is priceless, with BBQ or not!!!

There was also a crab shack in Icy Strait Point with a long line of customers. There are only a couple of DCL cruises that visit that port each summer, though.

We went on a DCL port adventure out of Juneau last summer that went to Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching, and then we had lunch with grilled fresh salmon(caught the same day) at a cabin overlooking the water. Great PA!
