Salma Hayek breastfeeding a baby in Africa.

Eh, I'm indifferent on it really. It's not something I would do, but if she wants to do it, more power to her.

Aww that is super sweet!

If there was a crying and starving baby and I was producing millk you betcha I would feed that baby. He definitely deserves all of those good vitamins and minerals from human milk.

That's what I was thinking!

How could you see a starving baby, be able to feed him, and NOT do it?

i'm waiting for a breastfeeding in public argument to spike up, just to be honest.

that was sweet.

i have to admit, every time i see a commercial or picture of a homeless, starving child, i cry my eyes out.

it makes me so emotional, nobody, especially a young child should go through anything like that. :(

IDK. I just found it kind of mean because in the video they showed a bunch of other starving kids, yet they only showed her breastfeeding one.
IDK, if it were me, I would want to help more than one. Instead of taking the trip over there, using the money from my plane ticket to donate food to them, etc.

But this lady is loaded, she probably did both.

She was on a trip for UNICEF promoting tetanus shots. I'm pretty sure she didn't plan this.

I'm thinking she just happened to see a hungry baby, the mother couldn't feed it and she could. So she did.

Shelby, as for that argument. I'm on the side of 'Breastfeeding's very natural and no big deal. It's our own fault that we see breasts as so sexual.'

I didn't know about the UNICEF thing. Eh, it's whatever to me. If she wants to do it, more power to her. I, personally, don't know if I would be able to do it. 1) I don't even know if I want to breastfeed. (Flame me now, idc, but that's my opinion on it) and 2) I see breastfeeding as an intimate thing. It's almost like a time to bond with your child.

Now if we want to get into the breastfeeding argument like Shelby posted - I have no problem with BFing, but PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! don't whip out a breast in public.
I mean, idc if you breastfeed in public, but don't go around flashing everyone in the process. Like, there's a difference between discreet breastfeeding (strangers can tell you're BFing, but they can't see nip.) and flashing (stangers can DEF! tell you're BFing and they can see everything)

ETA - And there's a time and place for it too. I'm not saying you have to BF in a bathroom - I don't eat in a bathroom and I don't want to either. But please, don't BF during a funeral, and if you have to please make it discreet. My step-aunt did that during my grandmother's wake and it was very disrespectful. She took her baby, sat down on the wall next to the casket, and fed the child. She wasn't covered either, it was all hanging out. I found it utterly disrespectful.

::yes:: I totally agree with everything you just said.

lol i agree with shelby. society is just so full of themselves and omg-breasts are totally sexual even with a baby attatched to one.

actually, im waiting for angelina jolie to claim she fed two starving infants at the same time.

Lol! Now if it was Angelina Jolie doing it, I would automatically think it was a publicity stunt. But we rarely here of Salma Hayek and her charity work.

I truly believe she fed the starving baby and didn't think twice about it.

I wish there was some way to get milk out to these families. A lot of the moms are malnutritioned and they just can't lactate anymore, so the baby starves because there's not another solution. It's not like they can just go to walmart and pick up some formula.

There has to be a solution, we cannot keep letting this happen. :sad2:

I think it was a wonderful thing for her to do.
I for one thing wouldn't do it, but more power to her, I think it was very sweet.

:sad2: I hate seeing children like that, especially when I'm over here whining cause my dad won't bring me to Sonic. I'm glad we have people in the world like her, that actually give a damn about things.

as for the 'argument': I don't see breastfeeding as a bad thing. I just don't think I would do it. Its healthy for the baby, so I might do that suction thingy.
My mom tells me i will change once I become older and have a baby. So maybe, but me being fifteen at the moment, I don't see myself breastfeeding. and as for what was said about public breast feeding. ::yes:: I completely agree. Just today I saw a women in Walmart breast feeding her child, that looked a little to old to breastfeed, and I suppose he didn't want it anymore so he just stopped and looked away, and she did nothing! she didn't put it up, or try to hide it. nothing!

Do cows cover up their utters? No. Animals aren't ashamed of it.

Like I said before, it's our own fault that we see breasts as so taboo and sexual.

That said, I'm not saying women should walk around topless. But if you see a mother feeding her baby and the blanket slips or you see a little more than you were supposed to, why make such a big deal about it? She's feeding her baby afterall!

IDC if it's a little slip, as long as she covers it back up.

Let's face it, America is one of the most stuck up countries. It's unacceptable to walk around topless or showing nip because of public indecency laws. Besides, I think we're a little more civilized than cows.

Another thing that bothers me is the extended breast feeding. I'm not talking about until 2 years old, I mean like 4 years old. Once your child is old enough to ask in complete sentences for "momma milk", I think it's time to loosen the reigns. I've heard of people breast feeing 4 year olds to 11 year olds! :scared1: Wouldn't your milk be all dried up by then?

In some societies women don't even wear tops, especially not in the warmer seasons.

Don't even get me started on how subjective the words 'civilization' and 'civilized' are. No, we're not really more civilized than cows. Our civilization and society is just different from theirs. Same thing goes for cultures that see breasts as ways to feed rathar than things related to sex.

I agree that there is a time to ween your child from breastmilk, just as children are weened from formula or pacifiers. Do the 4 year olds eat other things, besides their mother's milk? Solid food and such? I can't imagine just drinking milk would provide enough nourishment, even though breastmilk is very nutricious.

I think when it comes to extended breastfeeding, its more of a comfort thing, than a nutritional one. Hopefully those kids get it from what they eat.

Frankly I hate it when women whip a **** out with covering herself up. But I'm more of a private person. If she has a blanket and I cant see anything then there's no problem. When the baby's gotta eat you do what you gotta do.

But that isn't our society. We live in a place that has public indecency laws. If you whip out a breast so that everyone can see everything, and you refuse to cover up, it's your problem. Move somewhere else if you don't like it. :confused3
You can say look somewhere else if you don't like it, but there are public indecency laws for a reason - no one wants to see it.
That's our society and that's just the way it is.

Oh, I know. When I see one whipped out (with a baby attached to it, lol) I get uncomfortable and look away as well.

I'm just saying, it's our fault we see it like that. Not directly US, but our society as a whole and the people who shaped it.

Like you said before, America is really conservative & private. The first two things that come to mind is gays and nude/topless beaches. In many many other countries those things are 100% perfectly normal.

The US is (sort of) ahead in many things like technology and science, but we're way behind in things like social equality.
