I haven't been asked (yet) by a cashier if I qualify for a senior discount. But about a month ago at Golden Corral I noticed on the receipt that the cashier automatically rang my wife and I up for it. And just today at the supermarket the cashier gave me the 5% Tuesday senior discount. I saw her scan a card and knew what she was doing. Neither she nor I said anything about it.

The first time it happened was about a year ago at the same supermarket. The cashier made it a point to tell us she gave us the discount. My wife's face had about a dozen different expressions in about 5 seconds.

Good for you. I know people who would say yes to get the discount.

If a cashier ASKED I might be truthful and decline the discount. But if she automatically assumes I'm old enough and gives the discount I'm gonna take it.

My mother isn't quite 55 but my father is. She gladly takes his AARP discounts, but he's in denial. Dunkin Donuts gives a free donut with a paid coffee for AARP!

Well I guess what I mean is, I have 3 children ages, 8, 18 and 28. So when I take my 8 year old to school, I guess alot of people think I am a younger mom. Like when I would tell someone that my 18 year old went off to college, they would say, oh I cant believe you have an 18 year old, you don't look old enough.And then of course I say, I also have a 28 year old. And of course my dad always tells me I look like Im 25 God Bless him lol!!!

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have three kids, with an 11 year age difference between the youngest and oldest. My younger two are four years apart. Through the years many school associations thought that I just had the younger two. When one of their classmates parents would find out I had a child 11 years older I would often get the "wow, you look good, I didn't know you were that old!". I never really knew how to take that, as I wasn't actually any older than they were, I just had my older child when I was 22.

Before I turned 21, people always thought I was old enough! (Starting at about 15). Now, I sometimes get told I have a baby face.
Thankfully I've never had any issues getting into a bar, or things like that.

I saw my total flash up at the cash register and then it flashed a lower number. I looked at my receipt. They gave me clergy discount! I was wearing a black coat and had a cross necklace on. They thought I was a minister or a nun!

When I would sell tickets that had a senior/pregnant/disabled discounts. I would always say "we offer discounts for seniors/pregnant/disabled does that apply to anyone in your group" that way I never had to flat out ask someone.

On the flip side, my parents (65) myself (30) my son (3) and my incredibly short 25 year friend all went to Rain Forest Cafe one day and they handed out the menus, regular ones for myself and parents and kids menus for DD and my friend! I felt so bad for her but she enjoyed her coloring while I had none lol!

It must be something with Golden Corral. We have one in Oshkosh and I was by myself after a dentist appointment and she asked me if I wanted the Sr. discount. I was 48. Like the OP said-sure wrecked my day.

A couple years ago before I qualified for the senior discount, I was at Golden Corral with my dd & her teenage son. As the cashier was ringing it up she said 2 adults & 1 senior, saying senior a little louder than the other words, lol. My grandson never lets me live it down, lol, and now every time we go there he says 'and 1 senior' loudly.
Our Goodwill stores here have a senior discount (25%) on Tuesdays, so I go there before work & the store is full of old people, lol. But the cashiers alway ask "do you qualify for the senior discount?" and they do look at your ID.

I'm with BobNC--who is really going to say someone looks older? My mom dated a guy who is 69 and he STILL tells everyone he is 55. 55?! WTH? I tell him he could win in his age group (running) if he'd just admit his real age.

Now when you see that Honey Boo Boo's mom is 32 and a grandmother, I understand more why people assumed my baby I had at 37 is my granddaughter! I posted last week that a girl at school told her DD looked like her 52 year old grandmother and my DD told her that was OK because she got the sweater from her 53 year old mother!

I keep getting AARP cards in the mail. They come with a spouse card. While I haven't joined, I get a kick out of thinking about it because dh would then have a card. I'm only 50, and dh is 5 years younger than me. He is a very young looking 45. I'd love to see him whipping out his AARP card for discounts!

I've been "insulted" twice in my life. The first was when ds13 was three years old. We were buying cards at a Hallmark store and I said something to ds about grandma. I guess the clerk thought I was talking about myself and proceeded to start a conversation about "isn't is so great being a grandparent?" I was 34 years old! I didn't bother to correct her, but I sure was steamed.

Last year dh and I went to White Castle for some sliders. I placed the order and paid. We were standing there waiting to get our order when I looked at the receipt and noticed that I had been given the senior discount. I started laughing and showed dh. I told him that I guess it was time for my to get to the stylist and get my greys touched up. I was 43 years old.

I guess if you feel that I look that old, I'll take your discount!!!

I disagree with the people who say that the worker can't catch a break - just don't ask! Management should just post a sign offering a Senior Discount, and what age they consider "Senior". Believe me, if people want the discount, they'll ask.

It would bother me too...I have two children 8 and 10... We were at a restaurant celebrating my 50th birthday this past summer. Really ruined my bday when the person at the next table said...oh, I am here with my grandkids too. I told her they were my kids...she replies, how old are you? Real nice.

I have to remember where we are...in my neighborhood. I am the norm..not so with the rest of the country. Most people on my area waited until late 30s or 40 to have kids here. (silicon valley) , this took place in NC.

Yep....if they ask, I'm going to say no but if it automatically shows up on my receipt, I'm not going to go back & fix it. Believe it or not, it can be a difficult thing to do for fixing those kinds of mistakes (maybe not so much anymore but definitely in the past. My mom wasted at least 1 hour one time attempting to get an undercharge fixed at a store...after that she pretty much did a never again...it will just make up for the times I'm accidentally overcharged & I don't catch it).
