Salad in a bag & chlorine!

I've just been watching a report about healthy eating. One of the things discussed was pre-packaged salad. Apparently the pre-packaged salad is washed in chlorine, twenty times stronger than the solution that's used in a swimming pool!! I know I won't be using that anymore!

I never liked it... always has a chemical taste to it. Guess the chlorine would explain it!

Chlorine is a very powerful germ killer. Since shredding salad greens destroys the greens' own protections, and rinsing the greens fosters an environment ripe for decay, I would hope that distributors of pre-packaged salad greens would do something to ensure that the bag o' salad you buy isn't brown and soupy before you even get it home into your fridge! A chlorine rinse sounds reasonable to kill whatever may be lurking on the greens already, followed by a water rince to remove the chlorine and particulate matter.
