I want to get something large, to hold a few days worth of salad

Salad should never be airtight.

My best success is making a large batch in a salad spinner and keeping it in a very cold fridge. I then rinse the lettuce and spin before each use. Make sure that when you store the salad you do not leave any water in the bottom of the salad spinner.

ok maybe being airtight is the problem.
so you leave it in the spinner?

Yes. I chop/tear it up, rinse it really well, spin, then I drain the water out and put the lid on it and stick it in the refrigerator in the spinner. That's the best luck I've had with keeping it fresh.

thanks, I am going to try that.
I don't even use a spinner..........I had one and tossed it out:rolleyes1
I should have kept it LOL
must get a new one!

I find that throwing a piece of paper towel in the bag with the salad helps keep it fresher.

I buy bagged salad at the grocery store and put it in one of those Glad-ware bins when I get home and put it in the crisper drawer in the fridge. Stays fresh anywhere from 3-5 days. Note that all the salad ingredients are dry--there's no tomatoe, cucumber, etc.:)

If I am making a salad from scratch (i.e., chopping lettuce, tomatoes, etc) I make it prior to serving and make only enough for that meal; however, lately, the prewahsed salad mixes in the bag have been CHEAP (Fresh Express for $1.00 a bag) so I've been using that and just adding a few "extras". I love a good salad and I adore the spray-on dressings--so low calorie:goodvibes

I would like to add that to my method. I just store the washed, chopped lettuce. I don't throw in the other stuff because that makes it go bad faster.

I buy the romaine hearts that come three to a bag. I chop off the tops and the stem end, and I wash them well in cold water. Then I wrap them in a paper towel, and put them in a zip loc bag. I normally don't seal the bag, but I wrap it around itself and put them in my crisper bin in the fridge. They stay fresh for a LONG time.

If I have leftover salad, I just put it in a tupperware bowl and someone usually eats it the next day. I've never kept a salad longer than a day or two. If there is dressing on it already (like a caesar salad), I toss the leftovers. I can't stand leftover dressed salad!

I never eat salad that is more than a day old. I gotta have fresh and I tear my own lettuce.

I read somewhere that tearing the lettuce is better than cutting. I use the ziplock green produce bags. Supposedly helps keep it fresh for longer. It usually gets eaten within 2 days.

I use these too and they last a LONG time. The particular brand that our Costco sells (6 to a bag) are very big and the leaves are tightly packed so I get a TON of lettuce out of them.
