Sagging economy slows plans for ‘Flamingo Crossings’ at Disney

Well in ECON 101 a business will operate if it can make $1 of profit. The reality is that no business would make an attempt at something if the only profit to be made on an investment was just a dollar. But PI was profitable. They felt they could make greater profits using the land in a different manner. While that may ultimately pan out, it hasn't panned out so far. They apparently had no signed contracts and those that were interested bailed out or postponed plans. Even with future plans, they could have reopened a few places and made profits once they saw plans were going to be delayed. Any profit is better than no profit....or a loss.

On a macro level, profit is your primary motivation. On a micro level you also have to consider how the operations of one business unit--even a profitable unit--impact others.

As you point out, Disney could have easily reopened some of the clubs. The fact that they haven't would seem to speak for itself.

Since PI closed, DIsney has:

1) Lost vendor contracts for several vendors who wanted to be in a more "adult" area (Harley Davison for one).

2) Seen a huge decline in sales of premium annual passes.

3) Seen the cancellations of several weddings and receptions.

4) Seen a decline in sales at stores across the Downtown DIsney area, as well as restaurants.

While these factors can be attributed to the economy, at the same time Pleasure Island's closing was also a contributing factor (as has been stated by guests/businesses involved in several of the above situations).

We hope they never develop that area. SR 429 was a blessing to us. We can now avoid all of the horrendous traffic on Rt4 when we make our regular trips to WDW. If and when they finally open that area up, goodbye to a quick road to Disney. :sad2:

I've only been to DTD once since PI closed. PI and Adventurer's Club WAS our destination, the rest of it was just incidental.

We would eat at Earl of Sandwhich or one of the other eateries there to have a bit before going to PI, and shop at World of Disney because we were down there, but there are so many other places to eat and shop at the World, that going to DTD is not worth it.

Well it speaks for something but I don't think it speaks for itself. Disney is never one to admit errors. And IMO, this was a major one.

I couldn't see the point in building what already surrounds Disney. From a tourist standpoint being to the west is a bit useless. A better bet might be a low priced campground resort to supplement Fort Wilderness. Or to replace Fort since Fort is sitting on prime real estate now.
