Saga Cruise Line Requests Covid Vaccine

(272) The Future of Cruising Lies With the Coronavirus Vaccine - YouTube

Found this interesting. Saga Cruise Lines is going to require you to have the vaccine, both doses, in order to sail. I wonder if other cruise lines will follow.

Thoughts?
I would think not so much. Saga is a small cruise line that primarily sells to age 50+ people. Since the vaccine isn't cleared for use by under 16, kids can't get it now. It's easier for them to require it of their passengers.

I also think that there may be some very healthy people that due to certain conditions may not be able to get the vaccine. Will be curious to see how those people are treated.

I think there's a good chance they will. Since it's adults who have the terrible effects from Covid-19 (and most children are asymptomatic or have basic cold symptoms) having all adults vaccinated would allow DCL to said safely (or as safe as any flu season) and begin making money again. Any other way there's too high a risk of adults becoming sick, quarantine, and aborted trips.

The other question is how long would this go on if they did? Would they start banning people with autoimmune diseases so they can't cruise forever? Will they also start to ban other groups like over 65's, infants, certain disabilities? Where does it stop, they could make a case for all of those. Being real here because I know people that love to cruise that could be impacted by this. Their jobs put them in one of the top three categories to be vaccinated if they can be so they are able to navigate life as safely as anyone.

You also have to consider the destinations. Do you think Spain is going to let a cruise ship of unvaccinated Americans wander around unfettered? Hawaii? (Hawaii has already started mentioning the vaccine as an option of entry requirement). Even if DCL didn't make the vaccines mandatory, I think many of the places you wanted to go will. Maybe cruises to Mexico would allow unvaccinated cruises, but I can't think of many other places.

I think it will be interesting to see how it’s handled and I hope it is only a short term thing.

I think requiring vaccinations, mask wearing, social distancing will, in the long run, be temporary. Now, "temporary" may last a year or more, but temporary, nonetheless. Once the virus is controlled (not eliminated), hopefully, it will fall into the ranks of the flu and other such things, and all these necessary steps will be reduced, if not dropped entirely.

That is my hope as well. For some it may be difficult to miss a cruise this year or next, but there are other vacation options. My 16 foot boat on a big lake if I shut my eyes I can pretend you are on the deck of a cruise ship with how much it rocks and rolls;)

I do know on boards for other lines, people of a certain age and above not being allowed to cruise has been a topic that floats around. Since I am not close to that age I haven’t read the threads, but there is some concern there.

Well...... I'm "close" to that age group that's told "just stay home if you're scared and let the rest of us go back to life". I find that offensive.

I'm all for getting the vaccine. And any variations of it as necessary. Much like the shingles vaccine. I got the first one, the one that was only 60% effective. Then they came out with a 2 vaccine protocol for a new one at 90% effective, I got those also.

I'd love to get back to cruising, eating out, and living life "as usual", but it just isn't smart right now, IMO.

Big difference between a small cruiseline primarily in Europe and a one primarily dealing with America.

Dont see this impacting DCL in the US just like Quanta doesn't impact any of the US airlines.

If they sail out of the US could the CDC put this restriction in place? Not sure how far their reach extends.

No sure what you are asking.

CDC doesn't and won't imo have a vaccine requirement.
I am just wondering since the cdc has been anti cruise line from the beginning if they would make it very difficult for ships to sail out of US ports.

So the cdc mandates it for the cruise lines.

Where did you see that the CDC is anti cruise lines?

I believe the CDC can block ships from porting in the US if there is a health risk. And I'm grateful for that. Much like blocking the plague ridden rats that were onboard ships.

CDC announced it last Summer and a few weeks ago that it was being classified as an endemic with flu and cold.

Its been posted in so many words for mo ths. They refused to talk with cruiselines all Summer. When Trump said the CDC could not prohibit cruiselines they shut the ports and said 60days before a ship wants to sail in or out of US with passengers they had to pass a certification. They won't tell the cruiselines what they have to do to pass. This means Summer cruises are for sure gone. Industries are predicting 2022 at the earliest.

This and short answer to not derail the thread is the cdc ignored other forms of transportation and targeted cruise lines in 2020. We will see how 2021 goes.

So I don’t know if and when a restart happens what powers the cdc still has. Vaccine could be part of rules for cruise ships to sail out of US ports.

They won't and honestly I am not even sure they can without a legal battle. Have not thought about it because I don't see any government entity in the US requiring a vaccine on US Citizens. (They could require it for a foreign citizen though maybe???)

I suppose but cruises were not opening up anytime soon so there was little to talk about.

Vaccine could be part of rules for cruise ships to sail out of US ports.

They won't be though. A federal agency imposing a vaccine requirement on US citizens would not go over very well. Even vaccine requirements that do exist in certain areas for things like school are done by state/local not by the federal government and 100% not by just an agency. There is a reason why the CDC puts out "guidelines" while the President puts out "travel restrictions" and State Government puts out "masking requirements".

The bigger chance is Caribbean countries require vaccines for port entry which I am not sure how big of a chance that is.
