Safety question ?

Do you ask the other parents about their guns? I make it clear I don't want to discuss about their guns/gun rights/etc. I just want to know if they do have guns that they are secured in a locked place while my child is there. Some people.are totally fine with that question. Others act like it is an intrusion.

Sometimes my kid doesn't get invited again and I always wonder if it's because I insisted on asking the questions before he goes over.

You're just asking "if" they have guns, are they secured. If someone refused to answer that, than I wouldn't let my kids go.

Some people may not want others to know they have guns because it is an attractive target for thieves, but your question shouldn't be a problem for them either.

ten years and he has never carried outside of new York and he never brings his gun home
Did he start his career as a state officer or was he in a smaller jurisdiction? 10 years is a long time he must be happy to be that much closer to retirement!

I hate to get in the middle of the peeing match you two seem to have going on and I am no way an advocate for guns at all but I must point out my disagreement with your above statement.

I would be willing to bet that mental illness and emotional instability would be a lot more than an underlying issue to their untimely death.

While the bullets in the gun did technically kill them if they didn't have a mental condition that gun would've never been used. If the gun wasn't there they still could've and probably would've killed themself just with another resource.

Desire to commit suicide+ gun = suicide
Desire to commit suicide-gun= suicide
No desire to commit suicide+gun= no suicide
No desire to commit suicide-gun= no suicide

These are statistics about lethality of methods and suicide attempt vs death. It doesn't matter mentally ill...not mentally ill. I was explaining the statistic I posted. Below is about lethality of methods. Articles are from various sources but statistics largely gathered from CDC.

But I don't think I've convinced anyone. The next time some teen (or troubled adult) gets his.or her hands on a gun and shoots himself or a bunch of people we can all say it was futile to lock it up. It would have happened no matter what.:confused3

When I was little my grandfather was fixing a shot gun in his hunting store and the gun went off by itself. Thank god he did not get hurt .

That isn't a gun going off by itself. That is someone that forgot to make sure the firearm wasn't loaded before trying to fix it.

There are 4 basic gun safety rules. That is literally rule #1.

1) Assume all guns are loaded.

They don't. If someone doesn't answer if their guns are locked or won't engage in the discussion, the kids don't go.

He started with the state he loves his job. my son want's to follow in dad's footsteps but It scares me with everything going on today. He is only seven so I hope he changes his mind and wants to be a doctor like my dad, or a lawyer like my brother. I love that my husband is a trooper but every time he walks out the door I pray he comes home safe.

A lawyer, trooper, doctor and teacher! You have quite the Norman Rockwell family :)

There are so many details, large and small in this thread that don't add up, I won't even address them because I will get another lecture.

...but, as someone who works with the mentally ill, I would like to address the suicide issue, even if it is off topic, because it I think that it is a very important one.

If a person is truly suicidal they will find a way, regardless of what you do. That being said, if you know or live with someone whom you know or suspect is suicidal you should take all precautions NOT to make it easier for them, especially if they are impulsive.

Please remove any guns, medications, or anything that you feel can be used as a weapon of self harm. Even if the person does manage to succeed in killing themselves I cannot even begin to explain that the guilt survivors live with under ideal circumstances, much less when it is your gun or medications they used.

Guns do have a higher lethality than other methods of self harm. Very few people who attempt to kill themselves with a gun fail. It does happen, but even when it does, there are often lifelong disabilities.

Preserving the life of your loved one is always much more important than maintaining your hobby or preserving your 2nd amendment rights.

If you or someone you know is suicidal or contemplating self harm, please seek help. You are not alone.

my husband is black and I am white. He comes from a black and white family as well

I apologize, this response was confusing to me. Since I was the one that asked what you meant by half and half family, which I now understand you to mean biracial. If your Husband is also from a black and white family, how is he just black? Do you say that b/c he inherited more of a darker skin tone? I find this a little interesting b/c my niece is biracial (Dad is white and Mom is black), and she has a darker skin tone like her Mom, but we don't refer to her as black.
