I was just seaching this forum for info on the Marriot Residence Inn/Resort Area since it got such a good review on Trip Advisor. They have an excellent AAA rate ($116) for a one bedroom suite and I was seriously considering it for our trip. But then I read some posts about how Garden Grove was an unsafe area, and others that say in Anaheim you could hear gunfire, etc.

Hey, I'm from NY and it takes a lot to make me feel worried, but I don't make a habit of vacationing in any area that would make me feel nervous with my family. I haven't been to DL since I was a kid and I don't recall anything about the area. But is this really an issue? Will I feel worried going into a local Target or restaurant? If so, should we spluge on an onsite hotel?

What is the real story?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the Residence Inn-Resort Area - it's a nice hotel, and though the parking area isn't huge, it's nice. There are a bunch of hotels right in your area, and I've visited them several times, and never thought that I should be worried. There is also a Target across the street, which is pretty convenient. There's another Residence Inn that I like a lot - Residence Inn Anaheim Maingate.

I think you'd do well in either one.

Thanks MaryJo. Do you prefer one Residence Inn over the other? I just thought the resort area one would be nice since it says it is brand new.

Personally, I prefer Residence Inn Maingate - only because the grounds are more landscaped. Your rooms are in bungalows, whereas the Residence Inn Resort area is in a high-rise. If you're really not going to spend a lot of time in the pool area, the Resort area one is quite nice, and I've been in the kids suite, and I really liked it.

While I am more careful about crime in any big city/tourist area, I feel very safe in the area you are describing. We have gone to restaurants in that area and to the Target without any problems.

A friend and I go alone with our 6 children (3 each!) aged from 7 months to 5, and we always feel completely safe walking back to the hotels at night, and feel safe in the hotels themselves also. I have yet to get a bad feeling there, but I am always aware since we are two women with a lot of young kids.

We have also gone to restaurants and the Target with no problems at all. Have fun!
