Safety Advisories for Renting Watercraft on 7 Seas Lagoon & Bay Lake

Be advised that the Watercraft CMs operating the WDW Watercraft boats servicing the MK have radios and you can guarantee they will report ANYONE using Searaycers driving recklessly or too close to the ferry boats, motor cruisers and motor launches to Lake Patrol who, depending on the circumstances, will throw the offender(s) off the water.

Stay at least 150' away from the ferry boats, cruisers and launches and stay out of the ferry boat channel - except to cross it perpendicular to the ferry boat direction of travel.

It certainly sometimes seems that guests renting Searaycers and other rental boats must sign a statement certifying that they are complete idiots and are willing to risk their lives and the safety of their rider, if any, in order to rent in these small boats.

There is a "No Wake" zone, in the Waterbridge Channel connecting 7 Seas Lagoon with Bay Lake.

Also, in this channel Searaycer renters need to occasionally look behind them to check for other boats - it seems most times, many renters are oblivious to anything to their stern - sometimes , Watercraft CMs piloting motor cruisers will, while still maintaining a safe distance, 'sneak up' on an oblivious Searaycer and lay on the cruiser's air horn just to see the surprised Searaycer operator :scared1: whip their head around getting a mild form of 'whiplash'.

Also, although not posted as with the Water Bridge Channel, the areas within 150' of all of the docks are considered No Wake zones. Unfortunately, this seems to not be commonly known. Although small boats, nevertheless, the wakes from Searaycers passing too close to docks at speed with a WDW Watercraft motor launch at the dock results in quasi-violent rocking of the launch presenting a safety hazard to guests boarding or disembarking the launch, and, to a lesser degree, the motor cruisers.

FYI - WDW Watercraft stopping distances (under full Emergency STOP conditions from full speed and calm water conditions with no guests onboard)

Ferry Boats (190 tons): 2+ boat lengths = 240'+
Motor Cruisers (20 tons): 1+ boat length = 70'+-
Motor Launches (10 tons): 1+ boat length = 45' +-

The most frequent Searaycer offences seem to be related to the ferry boat channel that runs in a somewhat straight line between the MK and the TTC. Some years ago, and not personally witnessed, a woman, obviously TOTALLY oblivious to the oncoming ferry boat, decide to stop her small boat right in front of a ferry boat in the middle of the ferry boat channel to take a picture. The result was not very pretty with the 'Cusinart' effect of the forward ferry boat prop on her and her smallboat.

Other frequent Searaycer offences include:
1. Wake jumping too close to the sterns of the WDW Watercraft.
2. Driving too close to the WDW Watercraft.
3. Going full speed too close to docks and docked WDW Watercraft.
4. Reckless operation near other boats.

To summarize, you now have some guidelines on what to consider when operating rental watercraft on 7 Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

It certainly seems that many WDW guests renting boats have been lulled into some false sense of security for whatever reason during their visit and forget that all boats can be dangerous if not safely and properly operated.

As it was once said during the WDW traditions course for all new WDW CMS:

"Always remember and never forget that many guests visiting WDW have left their brains at home."

Thanks for the information. We plan to do this for the first time on our next trip. It's good to know these kinds of things.

Wasn't this posted recently or am I going crazy? I do have to say I think the part about guests leaving their brains at home is unnecessary and distracts from the other good information in your message for me. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, it does seem like it was posted, word for word, last week or so as well.

And I agree that the part about "guests leaving their brains at home" is unnecessary.

This may be an upopular response and not trying to start an argument:hippie: but... respectfully agree to disagree. Maybe it is a bit blunt. If you were down here on a daily basis you may feel a bit differently. They are not talking about all guests and many may be taking it a bit too far. Another example: Why do some people let there kids swim(not talking about wading to the ankles or so) in the Lagoon in front of the Polynesian when the signs say not to? Risk Taking? False Sense of Security? ..... left at home? There is a reason not to swim in the lake. Have witnessed this too many times to count this summer and 3 children have died in the area this summer (NOT ON DISNEY PROPERTY Sorry to shout. ) from a rare Encephalitis caused by a Amoeba that thrives in freshwater lakes here with warm water temps.

Play it safe.

Hmm, I wonder if this went through the Disney legal department. If not, I know people who have lost their jobs for posting on this board and representing themselves as Disney officials. It doesnt matter if you're a CM or not, if these kinds of announcements dont come from Disney legal you can get into big trouble.

But it's still a bit insulting to readers on here to say it that way. It is better to give the warning, then leave the "brains left at home" comment off.

It is also assuming a lot about guests. Speaking for myself, I come from an area that is on a huge lake, and there have been summers where I have practically lived on a boat. Many of us are keenly aware of no wake zones, the damage boat props can do, etc.

A safety warning is great, but there's no need for the "brains left at home" stuff. It is better to wait for an insult to be earned by someone, then dish it out if necessary (but is it ever necessary?), rather than to do it preemptively like that.

I am sure there are people who do stupid things on the lakes at WDW, just as they do stupid things on the lakes where I live. But warnings can still be friendly, and in fact are more effective if done that way, so people focus on the actual warning.

maybe....but still nevertheless very very true from what I've seen in all the years I've been to WDW...

Routine Examples: :headache:

- parents not controlling their kids running and obnoxious behavior.
- adults acting like they are 'entitled' to circumvent/ignore safety cautions/instructions from cast members just because they have spent money at WDW.
- jumping/opening closed gates at the ferry boat docks at the Magic Kingdom and at the Transportaion and Ticket Center to try and get on a ferry boat that is casting off (leaving the dock).
- butting in wait lines.
- parents allowing their kids to use expressly prohibited 'Heelies' - sneakers with wheels.
- people expecting boats to re-dock to pick them up when they have arrived at the dock just as the boats are leaving. The boats are like the monorails - once they leave - they leave. Ever see a monorail stop, backup and reload after it's left the monorail station?!?!?!?? Don't think so...same with the boats.
- Littering
- DITTO on Endeavour105's comments regarding unsafe operation of rental boats.
- People not allowing/planning enough travel time to get to their meal reservations and complaining to cast members that they're going to be late.

"Newbie" here on the Disboards BTW.

Agreed!!! Unnecessary!!!!! As it is everytime he posts that lovely phrase.

After some thought I see your point. Can we agree to somewhat agree or do you disagree? ;) :hippie:

Someone who is this irritated about other peoples behavior needs to find somewhere else to work or a different vacation spot. Sounds like someone is very burned out. The continued posting of Disney rules and then the insults to the guests are as annoying as the behavior the poster is describing! Sorry that everyone coming to WDW isn't a perfect Disney soldier at all times.

OP: Do you now or did you previously work at the GF marina (referring to this post and the OP)? Just a wild guess....

How anyone could do anything risky in those little putt putt dumbed-down boats is beyond me. They've retarded the motors to the point where you can't even get up on plane in the Searaycers if you weigh over 140 pounds, and the other boats go about 3 miles per hour tops. Anyone could outwalk them at a slow amble.

They go so slow now, they're incredibly boring, we don't bother to rent them anymore.
