Is this true?:scared1::worried: VERY SAD to hear about 500 Disney IT employees laid off!
SCARY!

The first post magic band axe...

That was pretty easy to predict...if you look at it realistically. They outsourced the system support to a company in India.

Magic, wishes, and dreams...I always say.

A large portion of Disney IT is outsourced. It has been that way for many years. I know several engineers who work at Disney but are employee's of Xerox who manage Disney Parks Enterprise Storage and backup. Been that way for at least 5 years now.

Ok...but the reality is its taking good jobs from people living in Orlando and supporting the local economy and infrastructure and shipping it overseas at reduced rate.

Because "everyone is doing it", never made it right or respectable. Groupthink at its worst.

I never said it was right nor did I say I supported this, just that this is not anything different than they have done over history. I was explaining that almost none of Disney's IT staff is made up of cast members. When they rolled out the MIM system for the buses, they were hiring local IT people to support it. I went and applied, having used the system as a driver and working support for the system at MK during initial rollout, I felt that I would be a good fit. So did the casting manager. I turned it down when I found out that it was for a year and then the maintenance/support would be outsourced.

Xerox does hire local people, they have to. There is some onsite presence required.

This is like a construction project. Because the large construction project is done and workers must move on and find other employment is not a negative. It is how things work in the IT industry. I was involved on the State side of a large IT project and hundreds of people were hired. Then as the project they came and went. At the end of the project most were let go. Some stayed with the company and moved to other projects. Some transferred companies or subcontractors. In other words, the extra employees for a giant project that is now complete are no longer needed. That isn't bad, that is life. They knew it had an end point.

I certainly agree with Yellowstone regarding the addition of employee for a major construction project and then phasing them out as a project goes online! In addition the good part of this is that the people leaving are not people who interface with visitors to the parks. I don't even support day-to-day Park operations so at least this is going to be something that affects the visitor experience like so many other cutbacks have!!

Not taking anything away from anyone - my cousin was part of this group - was told before signing on how long the project would last. This is not a shock to anyone - most of these IT guys/gals work on these large projects and move from one to the next. They are well aware of the terms going in.

It really doesn't matter the hows and whys of it. There are still 500 people with out jobs and more jobs going over seas.

Ok...good to know - at least

Not really, there are probably just 500 fewer people working on the project! There probably are no more jobs going overseas as a result of this. As noted by other posters IT jobs are like this. You hire a bunch in for a project, when it's over you let them go and they go to another project someplace else!

So apparently some employees were told to reapply in Oct. If this is true, I wonder if it indicates another large IT project expected to take place
