Sad sad day..

I'm so sorry about your loss. Losing a pet is so hard espcially when they are such a big part of the family.

I am so sorry for your loss!
As far as other animals it just depends on the animal, kinda like people are. Each deals differently. When our cat Trixie passed, our cat Lucy and our Dog sasha seemed to really miss her. However when we had to rehome our other cat Sadie, NO ONE missed her at all! It was like party time with the others.
At mom's house when her Sheltie passed the eskie cried for days. The other sheltie seemed to care less. When the other sheltie passed the eskie seemed confused but not really upset. They then acquired another dog, a short chubby mixed breed of somesort, and when the eskie passed he cried for weeks. (When I say cry I mean cry! It is the saddest sound I ever heard.) Shorty also refused to eat for a while. That is why I say it depends on the animal and they each react differently.

I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets have such a major impact on our lives. It's amazing what four legs and some fur can do to someone's heart. I am sure your beloved dog knew how much he was loved.

Thanks so much for your guys posts, they're really helping me out. It helps to know that other people have gone through what I am going through and can tell me what to expect. I'm already kind of at peace with his passing but am still missing him like crazy. We have his collar hanging around a picture of him on our tv, as well as a few pics of him around the house. It helps to see them. Thanks again for all the replies..

:grouphug: (((HUGS))) to you. I feel your pain. The first while is the hardest. It really does feel like you have a pit in your stomach. Gradually the grief starts to ease a bit, but I don't think you ever stop missing them.

We lost our beautiful yellow lab, Hunter, at just over 8 yrs of age. Far too young and it happened much too suddenly. DH and I were a wreck. We ended up having him put down, so we took our other dog with us so she would know what had happened to him. She came in with us and when he took his last huge breath, she walked over and smelled each of his paws and then sniffed all along his mouth. She then turned and walked out. They say animals understand death, and this way she knew he had died, rather than waiting for her hero to come home. It was so sad.

Here is a website I went to a lot when we lost him ... www.petloss.com. It talks a lot about the Rainbow Bridge which is comforting and sooo true (I believe anyways). You can post a tribute to your pet as well.

This is a poem I also used (sorry don't know who wrote it) ... I made a "In Memory of Hunter" page and put this on it ...

Weep not for me though I am gone
into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long
upon my soul's sweet flight.

I am at peace, my soul's at rest
there is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed
for all those many years.

There is no pain, I suffer not
the fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts
in your memory I live on.

Remember not my fight for breath
remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death,
but celebrate my life.

and one more ... because I like poems and find comfort in them ...

LAST NIGHT

I stood by your bed last night. I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today. You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me".

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away".

You sat very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew…
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over…I smile and watch you yawning and say
"Goodnight, God Bless, I'll see you in the morning".

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out…then come home to be with me.

I am so sorry for your loss. This hasn't been a good day for the pets on the DIS. :sad1:

I am so sorry for your loss. It is difficult to lose a beloved pet. It has been almost a year since we had to put our westie to sleep and it still hurts. It does help to think of the good times and the happy times with them. Take care.

so sorry! :grouphug: I know the pain is unbearable! We lost our German Shepherd when he was only 4 and it was soooo hard!

I am so sorry for your loss:grouphug:

The next little while will be full of 'firsts' as is the case with the first night of him not sleeping in your room and each time your heart will break a little. The hurt never goes away, but it does get easier. If only they went the whole journey with us.........:sad1:

What a Blessing that your furbaby shared your life..you will meet again
