I just got home from the vet. I found out my cat has cancer and I'm going to have to put him to sleep. I'm so devastated. What do I tell my two year old? I really don't know what to tell her. I have my skin cancer surgery tomorrow. I'm completely overwhelmed, and just needed to share with my DIS friends. :sad1:

That's so sad!:sad1:( I love my cat's and I am so sorry you have to put yours to sleep! I will be here to help all the way!:flower3:

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty :( My condolences to you. There is AN excellent book for children, by Mr. Rogers of all people, called When a Pet Dies, I believe. Thankfully, your DD will not be nearly old enough to comprehend what is really going on, but just keep it simple for her.

Good luck to you on your surgery and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear about your kitty and I hope you feel better soon.

Kathy, I'm so sorry! :sad1: Good luck on your surgery tomorrow. We'll be thinking of you.:grouphug:

As a vet I deal with this all the time. The fact your little one is so young works to your advantage. At that age they really don't understand life and death and are much more accepting of "Fluffy went to heaven" or "Fido is with grandpa now". They don't miss them after only a few days. It is much harder once they are 6 or 7 years old. In those cases I preach honesty with the kids.

I am very sorry to hear about your kitty. It is like losing a member of your family. If you have any questions or need any advice feel free to PM me.

Hope your surgery goes OK.

When my son was about 4 our cat died and my son was devastated. We found a wonderful book called "The Tenth Good Think About Barney". It is very simple story you can read to a child. It is narrated by a little boy whose cat dies. I read it so many times I think I could recite it from memory. I highly recommend it. Best wishes. I know this is a very difficult thing. Good luck with your surgery too. Sorry to hear so many things hitting at once.

So sorry about your cat. As others have said... keep it simple when you talk to your little one. Prayers are with you as you go into surgery. Keep us informed.... We care!

I am so sorry. Pets really are a part of our family. I will keep you in my prayers.

I'm so sorry. Of course you're overwhelmed. I wish I could do more but I'll do what I can - good thoughts, pixie dust and love headed your way! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

Kathy,

Sorry to hear about your cat. We had our first cat for 19 years. When it came time, it was hard on our whole family. The girls were old enough to understand but still very sad.

Someone recommended The Tenth Good Thing About Barney - great book. I also recommend it.

So sorry to hear your kitty died.

When I was a young child, and my cat died,
my Mom explained her absence by saying that my cat "Ran off and got Married"

I guess I accepted that OK at the time.

 So sorry to hear about your fur-baby. Sending you pixie dust for tomorrow.

so sorry about your pet. our dog died 3weeks ago and its been really tough on all of us...especially our 5 year old. i hope your skin cancer surgery goes well. will hold you and your family in my prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat, the loss of a pet is never easy.

Good luck with your surgery tomorrow!!!!

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers!

So sorry to hear about your cat. We had to put our 10 YO dog to sleep last year after we found out he had cancer. I had had him since the day he was born. Our son was 2 at the time and kept asking where Roscoe was and we told him he was heaven. He never grieved but I made up for it. It was difficult and I still get sad when I think about him or look at pictures. What helped me the most was to get a new dog. I call her my little angel that was sent to me. We rescued her from the humane society and I think all the time how we saved each other. I needed her and she needed me. You might need time to heal, but consider getting a new cat. It will never replace the one you lost but it can help you feel better, at least it did in my case.

And best of luck to you with your surgery tomorrow
