Sad about lost stuff that wasn’t found…

I will preface this by saying I know it’s 100% my fault that I left stuff behind. Just needed to get this off my chest…

I was checking out of WL and realized about 2 hours after the leaving the resort that I had left behind a significant amount of stuff. About 12 necklaces, 6 pairs of earrings etc. They were left in a drawer under the TV. I immediately filed a report and called guest services. Yes a case was opened. I was hopeful when I read many resolved cases here.

I just got an email saying that they can’t find it and it’s closed.

How does that much stuff disappear? Unless housekeeping took it (so doubtful!) or they missed it and the next room guest took it… how else could half a drawer full of stuff just go missing?

We don't lose things in drawers. DH, after I pack up, opens every single drawer, even ones we never use , like the one next to the bed. But we've almost lost stuff that were plugged in. Chargers, nitelights, stuff like that. Nothing compared to your items, but easy to do with the rush of packing and getting out of room. Sorry this happened.

I’m sorry you lost your stuff. It’s so disappointing when you know exactly what was left and where you left it, only to have someone tell you nothing was found. I can’t imagine keeping any items from a previous guest if I found something in the room. The only things I have found from a previous guest though were an unopened gallon of milk in the fridge and an adult magazine in a closet. I did leave a shirt behind hanging in a closet once, but fortunately it was the hotel where my sister works and the housekeeper knew me and took the shirt to my sister to get back to me.

I have a routine now when preparing to check out of a hotel. The evening before, I unload every closet, drawer, and counter space and put all the items on the made up bed. I pack until the bed is empty. Then I check the drawers, safe, and closet to ensure they are all empty. I shower that night, and pack all toiletries. While I am packing up, my devices are charging and the last thing I pack are the chargers and cables. By the time I go to bed, everything is packed and the room has been checked twice, including under the bed. In the morning, I still give the safe one last check before leaving the room. It sounds like a lot of work, but I can usually be completely packed and the room checked in about an hour.

I don't think Housekeeping is going into the drawers while they're turning a room over.

My son once left a new pair of glasses at a hotel once while on a hockey trip with his team. We went back to the hotel a few days later in hopes of finding the glasses. The housekeeping staff opened a drawer and it was overflowing with glasses that had been left behind. My son's glasses might have been one of them, but we couldn't readily identify them. I guess it's not too surprising your items weren't "found". My guess is they were added to a whole lot of other lost items and couldn't readily be identified as yours. Sorry for your loss. I know it's a bummer.

The frustrating part for me has been forgetting stuff and remembering about 2 hours up the road. Pull over and call and say, 'I left my stuff in the safe.'

That was my last experience with leaving some stuff behind at Disney World. Eventually it was retrieved but I had to worry that it was gone for 3-4 days.

Another situation was years ago at AKL (not villas). Set my phone down on the bed minutes before leaving and walked out without it. I was still on property and called but no one was interested in checking or trying to retrieve it from the room. I was given a spiel about their procedures which would entail where it would go if it was found, not - we'll call HK to see if the Housekeeper has seen it or has it.
That time I returned to the hotel in maybe an hour and I went upstairs and the housekeeper in the hallway opened the door to the unmade room and my phone was where I left it. My key no longer worked

Called after leaving a Hyatt 20 minutes earlier where I realized I left a charger and no one was interested in helping. Told me to fill out the find my stuff website. Never got my charger back.

And, credit where credit is due: left a plastic container in the mini fridge I valued a tiny bit at a Fairfield Inn on the way to Disney. Called them, they went and got it, called me back and said they could keep it for me for when I stayed there on my return. Marriott for the win!

I lost stuff that was left behind within about two hours after leaving, too. Favorite old bra, a toiletry bag (empty), and a T-shirt. I would have thought that stuff like that housekeeping would turn in because who else would want it? I suspect they thought of it as trash. I wasn’t packing up my own stuff (long story), and it wasn’t high value stuff, but I was disappointed, so I get it.

I am so sorry, I know how disappointing that can be. We've lost a few special things over the years, did lost/found reports, but nothing. Sure wish they could've found them.

Is there a possibility that there was enough value to file a claim on your homeowners policy if you own a home?

I've stopped traveling with jewelry because I'm always afraid I'll lose something pricey.

oh, this reminds me of when I was moving to another room at BWV and I left my sunglasses and leftover pizza on the kitchenette counter! Go back into room and housekeeper is in there. No checkout yet. They saw me leave with a suitcase which I put in my car (I think, it's been a while) until my new room was ready. I said where's my stuff? She had put it in the trash which was right outside the door. That included both sunglasses and pizza box. I grabbed the sunglasses but left the pizza.

Obviously it was too much trouble to turn in the sunglasses.

Personally speaking, I'm not so naive to rule out housekeeping finding and keeping, pretty sure they check drawers.

If missed, next guest is possibility too.

appropriate response for following "lost and found" protocol. Highly doubt Disney would throw their housekeepers under the bus.

Sorry about your items, that's so frustrating. I do the same as others mentioned; I go through every drawer after we're packed up.

But, I also lost something at DW and I was VERY frustrated but not nearly to the point I would be if I were you.

We had been at Typhoon Lagoon and I had a pair of folding Persol sunglasses. We were sitting on a bench outside the park waiting on our uber driver and I guess I sat them on the bench while we were sitting and waiting and forgot them, and thought they were in my bag. I realized within 1 minute of being in the uber and he turned around (we were still in the parking loop) and they were gone. The Bench was right next to the ticket booth area and they said no one turned in. So in maybe 2-3 minutes they were taken and not turned in. I Don't understand finding something like that and not turning it in. They probably didn't recognize the brand as it's not as well known as say Oakley or Ray Ban etc.

So, I take my frustration of that and then think about all the things you lost (had taken) and wow that would be my frustration x 10!

You really need to look in every drawer etc.

Its definitely possible that housekeeping stole it. Back in the day my sister forgot her wallet in the room when we went to the parks.
When we got back she realized $200 was missing. She filed a report and it was never solved.

But what is actually more likely in your situation is that housekeeping also did not look in the drawers and the next guest saw it as finders keepers.
They really don't take enough time to properly clean things. I've found random clothes etc from previous guests.

I've found many items. They are more focused on changing the bedding and cleaning the bathroom.

I remember once my wife left her blanket behind at Disney(all stars I think) it was just a blanet she liked at the time no sentimental value since Disney refuses to provide any type of conforter and she's always cold. We didn't think anything about it just....oh well. A few days later we recieved a package in the mail whith her blanket.

Oh, that is so frustrating! I know it won't help for these items, but DH and I have a routine when we check out of a hotel that we call "check, double check". One of us goes through the entire room calling out what we are opening and saying that it is all clear. Then the other person does the same thing. Once both of us have checked, we are pretty sure nothing has been left behind. (This was after I managed to leave my kindle in an airport hotel, after that we always check and double check.

Sorry this happened.

We check all before leaving. Of course, one trip, may years ago at WLVs, my daughter left a Harry Potter Wand and some other souvenir from there. One of us thought the other checked. She did not realize she left it behind for over a week - teenagers had not fully unpacked. I took a chance. Called Disney, directed to Lost and Found and we were lucky. They mailed the items right away.

I guess it all depends on the person cleaning the rooms. Like anywhere else, some might go out of their way and some can't be bothered. Of course it's possible housekeeping took it or the next guest .

We have been lucky leaving laptop on table and leaving the safe open with wallets. The CM who took out the garbage had closed it. (That is another story ).

There is a long shot it pops up in a couple weeks, happened with a stuffie not too long ago. But, if it doesn’t show it’s gone. It’s not rocket science what happened. Someone took it and kept it, gave it away and/or trashed it.

Next time you’ll check every drawer. I had to learn that lesson the hard way too. (And after that story sometime back of someone finding a gun in their room I check all draws on arrival too!)

Goodness sakes DON’T DO THIS- unless it’s worth substantially more than your insurance!! In the olden days doing this hurt but wasn’t destructive. Nowadays forget it! Your homeowners insurance is already on an elevator up if you’re a normal American and a claim will basically guarantee you take a rocket up next year- IF they even keep you.
