S5 - When is it coming out?

Okay - a family member really, really has her heart set on the S5. I'm not finding a street date for it. I have tried to talk her into an S3, she is only using the camera for family shots and such. But she wants this camera (and she wants it in time for a wedding next month!)

Anyway, I've checked in many places - but haven't found anything definite. Does anyone know? Thanks!

Thanks!!! - do you know of something comparable? Like I said, I've tried to talk her into an S3, I've been SO happy with my S2. She wants a higher MP camera - not sure why, she he really doesn't know what a MP is per se', but she's seen another family members photos and now she HAS to have the higher MP camera.

(I have clear photos too, with an S2 - I guess mine don't count!) She is pretty much just taking photos at family events, for 4x6 printing.

Anyway - I don't think she'll use a ton of features, she doesn't need a hotshoe, and I'd say as little manual as possible. I wish she'd go with the S3, that is really more camera than she needs to begin with.

Thing is... SHE WANTS THE S5

If she is somehow talked into the S3 every single time the picture is not perfect even when the defect was the result of user error, she will blame the person that talked her into the S3 and she will swear that the S5 would have resulted with a better image.

And in my experience with Canon announcements to street dates, they usually start hitting the shelves within a month of being announced. But I have only really paid attention to their DSLRs, it may not be the same with their point and shoot division.

But I have to agree with you that if she is set on the S5, then that's the only thing that will make her happy

But she also wants the new camera before the wedding mid-July. So she may not be able to get the S5 by then.

(sigh). And I did think of that. Her pictures aren't as clear due more to the user and not the camera she now has.

Anyway - thanks everyone! I will tell her there isn't any date yet. She keeps sending me photos of other cameras (and then I look them up on Amazon for reviews), the only thing she is really looking at is how many MP there is.

I think it was groucho that had a good article on why MP's aren't very important over a certain level, hopefully he will be along soon and can share it again.

That would be great! Maybe it will help. I think the S3 would be perfect - not too difficult to use, which is important as well.

I just saw on the website of a local camera store that they are offering the Canon S5 for $499.99. There was no mention of it being a preorder before the release date, so I don't know if it's out there or not. I would think it would be getting the attention if it were.

Just checked Circuit City's website and they have a release date of June 18.

Everyone is saying July, except CC. My mom noticed it just went off "preorder" on Amazon. Not sure if that means it is about to release. Thanks.

Since I've seen actual pics from the S5 on some other camera sites, I guess it's safe to say that it's been released for purchase. Availability seems a little spotty as it's just getting going.

One word of caution, in the side-by-side comparisons I've seen the S5 *is* noisier than the S3 ... the DIGIC III can't really do much about cramming even more MP on a small sensor.

Someone really needs to sit this family member down and explain to them the relationship between noise and MP, and that if you aren't planning to do BIG prints there's NO reason to have a high MP camera.

Despite all the MP-hype going on, lots of MP does NOT mean "better pictures".

The S5's a great camera, to be sure, but it is noisier than the S3.

I just came from Best Buys and they had them for sale. Except for a slightly larger screen, they look identical. The S5 has 8Mpix where the S3 has 6. The zoom is the same. It goes for $499. For just a bit more, you could venture into the DSLR range...

My relative is a novice with cameras - she'd definitely not go into the DSLR cameras (I think this one will be too much to begin with, she'll be asking me a lot of questions).
